George Bush, the "champion of democracy" bypasses Senate and appoints controversial "hawk" Bolton to represent US at UN
The President used his executive power to fill important posts while Senate is in recess to end the five-month impasse with Democrats, who refused to accept Mr Bolton's nomination. They accused him of abusing subordinates and twisting intelligence to fit his conservative ideology. The appointment of Mr Bolton, a plain-spoken hawk who currently serves as the Undersecretary of State for arms control and international security, was confirmed at a ceremony at the White House. "This post is too important to leave vacant any longer, especially during a "war" and a vital debate about UN reform," Mr Bush said, announcing the appointment. He said that Mr Bolton had his complete confidence. Most diplomats at the UN are seeing this as an other disaster in the making for the US on the world scene.
