Turkish Premier Calls On Europe Not To Make "historic Mistake"
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday called on the European Union not to make a "historic mistake" by making tougher conditions on Turkey's bid to join the union.
"Turkey is as important for the European Union as the European Union is for Turkey," Erdogan told parliamentary colleagues in Ankara. Turkey's membership talks hang in the balance due to Turkey's refusal to open its ports to Greek Cypriot shipping, with Ankara refusing to budge on the issue unless embargoes on the Turkish Cypriot north are removed. The Turkish prime minister has said repeatedly that it is unfair to punish Turkey when it was the Turkish Cypriots who had voted in favour of a UN-sponsored reunification plan on island. "The blame is totally with the Greek Cypriots," Erdogan said on Tuesday.
