Europe's Ariane rocket launches two US satellites
A heavy-lift Ariane-5 rocket blasted off from French Guiana late on Friday, putting two American telecommunications satellites into orbit in its fifth mission this year, space officials said. The rocket launched on schedule from Europe's space base in Kourou, on the northeast coast of South America at 7.08 p.m. (2208 GMT). Twenty-seven minutes after launch, the rocket released the WildBlue-1 satellite for WildBlue Communication. WildBlue is designed to provide high-speed internet to rural areas of the United States and Canada. Five minutes later AMC-18 for SES Americom was orbited.
Friday's launch was the 30th launch of the Ariane-5 rocket series.
