France's new president will have powerful mandate for change - by Elaine Ganley
Whoever wins will have a powerful mandate for change. But the French have an almost visceral distrust of capitalism, a fear of globalization and see work and social protections as a birthright, so reforms must not be carried out too abruptly, experts warn. Sarkozy, 52, the front-runner, and Royal, 53, the charismatic leftist, have vastly different recipes to stop the slippage and renew the nation's confidence in itself. However, each acknowledges that France, a medium power that pessimists contend is in outright decline, must adapt to an increasingly competitive, globalized world.
