Brussels Blames Boeing - Lionel Laurent
The European Union delivered a salvo against the American government's backing of Boeing before a World Trade Organization hearing on Wednesday, arguing that the plane-maker's "illegal" U.S. subsidies had robbed Europe's Airbus of $27 billion in sales since 2003. According to Brussels, Boeing received "lavish" research and development funding from the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA, along with "subsidy packages" on a state and local level from Washington, Kansas and Illinois. It estimates the total amount of state aid at $23.7 billion, with varying time-frames, depending on each alleged subsidy.
