Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos and his unity cabinetwas sworn in Friday. They have the task to deal with the country’s controversial austerity measures and easing tension among EU member states nervous of worsening bloc-wide financial turmoil. Papademos was a VP of the European Central Bank.
Also today Italy's Senate gave its approval to a package of key economic reforms aimed at staving off bankruptcy and boosting the economy. Mario Monti, who is expected to be named Italian prime minister of an emergency government, was met by a round applause on Friday when he appeared in the Senate a day after being named senator-for-life. Monti, a former European Union commissioner, is the most likely candidate to take over the government reins from prime minister Silvio Berlusconi in the next couple of days after a round of economic stimulus measures are passed by Parliament.
As a life senator, Monti is given more exposure to take over the government. He is also the only name being publicly mentioned for the job.
Both Papademos in Greece and Monti in Italy are EU insiders and very knowledgeable of EU policies.
