Back in 2008, less subtle conservatives played the "foreign" card against Obama with the implication that he was more African than American.
Last night, Mitt Romney, delivering a punchy, aggressive, and well-received acceptance speech here after his win, tied Obama to another continent: Europe.
Three times he tried to saddle Obama with the baggage of Old World Socialism and suggested the economic crises that have plagued Europe -- and, he asserted, were caused by state-subsidized benefits and bottomless debt -- would soon plague the United States if Obama continued as president. This must be a focus-group home run.
Expect more of this – it got the most enthusiastic crowd response in the hall, and a row of lefty journos in the press section, cooed, nearly in unison, “That’s dangerous.”
Note EU-Digest: the positive side of this Europe bashing by the US political elite is that EU member states hopefully will finally understand how important it is to be unified and to get off the lap of the US.
