Washington’s public plea to David Cameron for Britain to remain in the EU was met with indignation from pockets of the Conservative party on Thursday as eurosceptics told the US to “butt out” of domestic affairs.
Peter Bone, a member of the Tories’ more extreme anti-European wing, said it was “quite ridiculous” that the US should tell Britons what to do regarding Europe. “It’s like us trying to tell Germany or France how to run their affairs,” he said.
John Redwood, a senior Tory backbencher and former leadership contender, remarked: “We have no wish to be told that we should lose our democracy in the cause of advancing America’s.”
An official in Number 10, however, described the intervention as “helpful” pointing out that Mr Cameron, faced with an increasingly eurosceptic parliamentary party, will have to rely on outside voices – political or business leaders – to make the case for European membership.
