The NSA Saga: Britain and US 'spied on Italy'

Britain and the US allegedly monitored the telecommunications of the Italian government and companies, a report has claimed. Italy's weekly L'Espresso said the espionage concentrated on three underwater fibre optic cables with terminals in Italy: the SeaMeWe3 and the SeaMeWe4 in Sicily and the Flag Europe Asia crossing the country.

Citing the journalist Glen Greenwald, who has worked with the US leaker Edward Snowden, the weekly said that Italy's secret services gave their consent to the surveillance. It said among areas of interest to the British was advanced military technology, which could include legitimate Italian trade deals with Arab countries.

The report said Italian intelligence services had knowledge of the information collected by the British under an information-sharing agreement, but gave no details. No comment was immediately available from Italian intelligence officials.
