US-based Whirlpool Corporation, the world‘s largest
producer of home appliances, has agreed to buy a majority stake in
Italy‘s Indesit Company for 758 million euros (1.03 billion dollars),
the two firms announced Friday.
As a result of the transaction with the Merlonis, the family that founded the Italian company, and their holding company Fineldo, Whirpool will acquire 60.4 per cent of Indesit shares, representing 66.8-per-cent of voting rights.
"We believe this will ideally position us for sustainable growth in the highly competitive and increasingly global home appliances market in Europe," Whirlpool Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jeff M Fettig said.
The deal is expected to be completed by the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval.
Indesit also sells products under the Hotpoint-Ariston and Scholtes brands. It has plants in Italy, Poland, Britain, Russia and Turkey, and around 16,000 employees. Its profits fell sharply last year to 3 million euros, from around 60 million euros in 2011 and 2012.
