Former European Council President Donald Tusk on Tuesday mocked
Donald Trump over the U.S. president's attempt to downplay the dangers
of the coronavirus.
Trump returned to the White House on Monday evening despite still
being ill with COVID-19. Announcing he was soon to be discharged, he tweeted, in part: "Don't be afraid of Covid. Don't let it dominate your life."
Tusk, who now serves as the leader of the center-right European People's
Party, chimed in on Tuesday morning: "Don’t be afraid of COVID. Be
afraid of cynical powerful people spreading lies about it. Don’t let
them dominate your life," he wrote.
In a video message
posted on Twitter in the early hours of Tuesday, Trump also said
vaccines against the coronavirus would be available "momentarily." The
World Health Organization has said it does not expect a coronavirus vaccine to be widely available until mid-2021.
