French clergy have sexually abused more than 200,000 children over the past 70 years, a major investigation released on Tuesday found, and its authors accused the Catholic Church of turning a blind eye for too long.
The church had shown "deep, total and even cruel indifference for years," protecting itself rather than the victims of what was systemic abuse, said Jean-Marc Sauvé, head of the commission that compiled the report.

The Netherlands: UN human rights committee criticises the Netherlands over child with 'nationality unknown'
The UN’s human rights committee says the Netherlands has violated a child’s rights by registering ‘nationality unknown’ in official records because this means he could not be registered as ‘stateless’ under Dutch law and therefore be given international protection as a stateless child.
‘States have the responsibility to ensure that stateless children under their jurisdiction who have no possibility to acquire any other nationality are not left without legal protection,’ said committee member Shuichi Furuya in a statement. ‘The right to nationality ensures concrete protection for individuals, in particular children.
The committee has now asked the Netherlands to review its decisions on Denny’s application to be registered as stateless, and on his application to be recognised as a Dutch citizen, as well as overhauling the relevant legislation. According to national Dutch statistics agency CBS, in September 2016 there were 13,169 children in the Netherlands under the age of 10 registered with ‘unknown nationality’, many of whom had been born in the Netherlands, the UN said.

The four companies began as "scrappy underdog startups" but are now monopolies that must be restricted and regulated, the report from Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee's antitrust panel says.
"These four corporations increasingly serve as gatekeepers of commerce and communications in the digital age, and this gatekeeper power gives them enormous capacity to abuse that power," a lawyer for the subcommittee's Democratic majority said in a briefing with reporters.

Facebook, a US tech giant known for abusing its users' private
information, has said the European Commission was now attempting to do
the same to Facebook employees' data.
The firm filed its complaints at the EU court in Luxembourg, after the commission asked to see internal documents containing any of 2,500 search phrases as part of an anti-trust enquiry.
Brussels-based news agency MLex first revealed Facebook's legal counter-strike in a story on Monday (27 July), citing anonymous sources.
US congressmen were also due to cross-examine Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Monday in a separate investigation into alleged abuse of the firm's online "dominance", but the hearing was postponed due to a clash with a memorial service for a US civil rights leader.

The Republican White House and Senate are currently conducting a tasteless tutorial in tyranny, making a Monty Pythonesque mockery of the U.S. Constitution and “the rule of law.” The Great God Trump was caught red-handed setting the U.S. Founders’ wigs on fire by trying to trade military assistance and a White House visit to Ukraine’s newly elected president Volodomyr Zelensky in return for a Kiev press conference announcing an investigation based on a right-wing conspiracy theory meant to discredit Trump’s perceived U.S.-presidential rival, the conservative Democratic blowhard “Pool Chain” Joe Biden.
Confronted with this presidential misconduct by a “deep state” (likely CIA) whistleblower, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was compelled to overcome her reluctance to impeach the pestilential fiend who contaminates America and the world with his every vile emission.

Turkey: Leading Turkish human rights defender sentenced for Twitter post - France 24
A Turkish court on Wednesday sentenced Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu, one
of the country’s leading human rights advocates, to two-and-a-half years
in jail for a 2016 Twitter post advocating peace.
A former head of Mazlumdar, a prominent Turkish human rights group, Gergerlioglu was sentenced for “disseminating terrorist propaganda”, a charge he denies.
The 53-year-old human rights activist was sentenced for a message he posted on Twitter on October 9, 2016, when he downloaded a photograph of a World Peace Day demonstration featuring Kurdish mothers protesting behind two symbolic coffins, one draped in the Turkish flag and the other in a Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) flag.

Poland: - Experts probe Polish govt's alleged breach of rule of law
European legal
experts on Monday began a fact-finding mission in Poland to determine if
Warsaw's new right-wing government has violated the EU member's
constitution and democracy rules.
Last month, the European Union launched an unprecedented probe into controversial reforms to the constitutional court and increased control over state media by the new Law and Justice (PiS) government after it swept to power in October elections.
Legal experts advising the Council of Europe, an international organisation that seeks to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law, will share their findings with the European Commission.
The Commission has in turn said it will review Poland's responses by March.
Poland's Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said Monday her government would "pay attention and be very open to the proposals" of the visiting legal experts. But she would not be drawn on how Warsaw plans to react to possible criticism.
She spoke at joint press conference in Budapest along side Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban.
The reforms in Poland are seen as emulating those of Orban, who has regularly been accused of undermining key democratic checks and balances since 2010, and who has also had a testy relationship with Brussels.

Artificial Intelligence: genuine concern, or fearmongering?
Dozens of prominent scientists have put their names to an open letter
warning the public about the danger of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
They are, specifically, worried about potential developments in
autonomous weapons, made possible by the progress of robotics and AI.
Among those endorsing the letter are Stephen Hawking, Noam Chomsky and Elon Musk of Tesla and Space X fame.
In the letter, the signatories claim “the deployment of such systems is – practically if not legally – feasible within years, not decades, and the stakes are high: autonomous weapons have been described as the third revolution in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear arms.”They highlight a large list of possible drawbacks to consider, should such weapons become reality.
For example, the signatories argue that they are relatively cheap to mass-produce, which could lower the boundaries for going to war, since fewer (if any) human lives would be lost.
The ‘human factor’ is also listed as one of few advantages of autonomous weapons, however, it is followed by:
“There are many ways in which AI can make battlefields safer for humans, especially civilians, without creating new tools for killing people.”
Mass-production could mean the weapons would easily end up on the black market or in the hands of terrorists wishing to destabilise nations, or war lords “wishing to perpetrate ethnic cleansing, etc.”
They write: “the key question for humanity today is whether to start a global AI arms race or to prevent it from starting.”
Their response: “A military AI arms race would not be beneficial for humanity.”
