Cure coming against aging? Senescent Cells Are Linked to Diseases of Aging, Study Finds - by Nicolas Wade

In a potentially fundamental advance, researchers have opened up a novel approach to combating the effects of aging with the discovery that a special category of cells, known as senescent cells, are bad actors that promote the aging of the tissues. Cleansing the body of the cells, they hope, could postpone many of the diseases of aging.

The findings raise the prospect that any therapy that rids the body of senescent cells would protect it from the ravages of aging. But many more tests will be needed before scientists know if drugs can be developed to help people live longer.

Sarah Outen a British woman rower conquers Indian Ocean

A biologist from Rutland has become the first woman to row solo across the Indian Ocean. Sarah Outen, 24, set off from the west coast of Australia in April and arrived at the island of Mauritius on yesterday (Monday) evening after 124 days at sea. Sarah Outen is a Biology graduate of St Hugh’s College, at Oxford University. For as long as she can remember she has always been a dedicated sportswoman on and off the water, loves adventure, wildlife and the outdoors. During the trip across the Indian Ocean she has been rowing up to 12 hours a day under a scorching sun, riding 30ft waves, battling winds and currents, sharks, capsizes and shipping traffic. It was not only a test of endurance, stamina and will power, but also in being able to handle extreme solitude.

Sarah Outen dedicated this venture to her Dad, who died suddenly in June 2006 after suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. So in his memory she has been fundraising for arthritis charities. For 2009 her project is supporting the work of Arthritis Care.
