Eight people were killed after a gunman opened fire at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis late Thursday before killing himself, according to police.
Four others who were shot and another who was injured were taken to hospitals, officials said, adding that some may have been privately transported to medical facilities.
No law enforcement officers were hurt in the shooting carried out by a former employee who last worked at the facility in the fall, authorities said Friday afternoon.

USA - Presidential Elections: Why this election calls into question whether America is a democracy
America has long held itself up as the world’s leading democracy, but it has an equally long history of denying people the right to vote.
To understand how voter suppression is shaping the 2020 election, just look at Texas. While many states do not require voters to have a reason to vote by mail, Texas only allows voters to do so if they are 65 or older or meet other conditions. The state does not allow people to register to vote online.

CLIMATE CONTROL: In denial: The spin machine upending the climate consensus
Climate law rollbacks in the US and Australia have origins in libertarian think tanks that trade in climate denial. Investigative journalists have exposed how one is now trying to strip climate protections in Germany.

EU-Turkey Relations: Will the EU-Turkey refugee deal collapse?
Rumors that Turkey might open its borders and allow Syrian refugees
to enter the European Union began swirling shortly after the latest deadly skirmish between Turkish and Syrian forces in Idlib province on Thursday.
Omer Celik, a spokesman for Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), said Turkey would no longer be able to keep refugees from entering Greece. Turkish media outlets ran reports claiming that busses full of refugees had been seen making their way to Turkey's borders with Greece and Bulgaria.
But the Turkish Foreign Ministry quickly denied the reports on Friday morning. "Our country, which has taken in more refugees than any other in the world, will not change its refugee and migration policy," said Hami Aksoy, the ministry's spokesman.

Switzerland - Davos: Trump in his Davos speech plays down the threat of climate change - by Ishaan Tharoor
In
the buildup to the World Economic Forum, the focus was all on climate
change. On its first day, the forum’s organizers announced an ambitious
agenda that would enlist a broad consortium of banks, companies and
civic leaders to make this year’s event a “tipping point” for global climate action.

In
the hour that preceded an address from President Trump, an envoy from
Pope Francis urged the throng of gathered billionaires, corporate
executives, politicians and celebrities to recognize their “moral
responsibility” to safeguard future generations. Simonetta Sommaruga,
the president of the Swiss Confederation, went to the dais and warned of
“a world on fire.”
She told the crowd, which included figures such as
former U.S. vice president Al Gore and European Commission President
Ursula von der Leyen. “We need politicians to take action in their own
country and internationally to ensure that the ecological balance is
ensured and global warming is stopped.”
In the first of two speeches Tuesday,
Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenage climate activist, once more scolded
political leaders and media elites, accusing them of not making
expressly clear the scale of the catastrophe facing the planet. “Without
treating it as a real crisis, we cannot solve it,” she said.
Then
Trump spoke.
He used his plenary moment — the forum’s first speech by a
major world leader — to take a victory lap of sorts, celebrating the
U.S. economic “boom” under his watch. “America is flourishing, and, yes,
America is winning again like never before,” Trump declared in what was
essentially a 30-minute campaign stunt, albeit devoid of the familiar
xenophobic demagoguery.

EU-Turkey relations: EU denies reports of further Turkey aid cuts
Media reports about massive cuts in funding "are completely wrong and misleading," an EU spokesman has said. The bloc cut pre-accession funds to Turkey in 2017 and is not planning further cuts.

USA in impeachment mode: Trump attacks impeachment accusers in tweets that mentioned civil war - by David Jackson
President Donald Trump opened another week of impeachment turmoil
with slashing attacks on his accusers – including a suggestion that a
leading investigator be arrested for "treason."
Claiming that Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, falsely described his phone call with the president of Ukraine, Trump tweeted Monday: "Arrest for Treason?"
Schiff did not immediately respond, but others called it an outrageous comment.
"Out. Of. Control," tweeted Republican strategist Mike Murphy. "Treason? A POTUS saying this? #UnfitAndUnstable."

USA: the "Trumpcapades" continue: Sanders says Trump has 'done nothing wrong'
The White House says President Donald Trump did nothing wrong the day
after his former attorney Michael Cohen said Trump had directed him to
make hush money payments to two women with the express purpose of
“influencing the election.”White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders tells reporters that the president has “done nothing wrong” and stresses, “There are no charges against him.”
She also calls it “a ridiculous accusation” to suggest the president had lied when he said he didn’t know about the payments at the time they were made.
Cohen on Tuesday pleaded guilty to a number of charges, including campaign finance violations.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says she’s “not aware” of conversations about a possible presidential pardon for Paul Manafort.
Manafort--President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman--was convicted Tuesday in federal court of eight financial crimes stemming from his work before he joined Trump’s campaign in 2016. A jury deadlocked on 10 other counts against Manafort.
Trump tweeted Wednesday about his respect for Manafort and called him a “brave man” for choosing to go trial over cooperating with prosecutors. Trump has also called Manafort’s situation “sad.”
Echoing the president, Sanders says Wednesday that Manafort’s case doesn’t have anything to do with the president, the president’s campaign or the White House.
She says conversations about a pardon for Manafort are “not something that’s been up for discussion.”
