As Hurricane Harvey continues its path over Texas on Saturday after
making landfall just before midnight Friday, video and images are
emerging on social media showing the rain and winds that hammered Texas’
Gulf Coast.
The massive hurricane is now a Category 1 storm as of early Saturday
after making its initial landfall as a Category 4 storm. It unleashed a
vicious wrath of torrential rain and 130 miles per hour maximum
sustained winds with even stronger gusts, according to the National Weather Service.

EU mobilises extra aid for typhoon-striken Philippines
The European Commission earmarked €10 million yesterday (12 November) to support the Philippines' reconstruction, adding to the €3 million announced on Sunday, after perhaps the largest storm in a century killed thousands and caused widespread destruction.
As the magnitude of the devastation wrought by Typhoon Haiyan unfolded in the Philippines (see background), EU Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, on a visit to the country, announced €10 million of additional EU aid for the rehabilitation of the typhoon-affected areas of the country.
The sum adds to the €3 million of humanitarian aid announced two days before by Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.
Beyond humanitarian assistance, Pieblalgs said the EU was already making resources available for rehabilitation and reconstruction to ensure that there was a smooth transition from crisis management to rebuilding people's lives.

Airline Industry: Faulty alarms caused Virgin Atlantic London emergency
A faulty alarm system forced a Virgin Atlantic plane to make an emergency landing earlier this week, the company said Friday.
The airline said that an investigation into the incident - when a plane flying from Britain to Orlando, Florida, returned to London's Gatwick Airport for an emergency landing - showed that a series of alarms went off during the flight, prompting the crew to decide to return to the airport.
It said the investigation found that the alarms had gone off unnecessarily and that there had been nothing wrong with the plane, an Airbus 330-300.
