USA: Dominion Sues Pro GOP Fox News for $1.6 Billion in Defamation Lawsuit

Dominion Voting Systems filed a defamation suit against Fox News relating to the network's reporting on the 2020 presidential election.

The lawsuit centers on unsubstantiated claims that the company helped to steal the election for President Joe Biden. Dominion filed the $1.6 billion case on Friday, according to the Associated Press (AP).

USA: Liar Liar your pants are on fire: Trump Fox News Host Pulls Apart Election Lies Trump Spouted On Network Hours Earlier - by Josephine Harvey

Fox News host Eric Shawn on Sunday debunked election disinformation that President Donald Trump shared on the same network only hours earlier.

Trump unloaded a stream of baseless claims about a rigged election in his first televised interview since the election to his devout Fox News ally Maria Bartiromo, who encouraged the allegations and allowed them to go largely unchallenged.

But Fox weekend anchor Shawn pointed out on “America’s News Headquarters” that Trump’s campaign has failed to prove any of his accusations in court.

“In fact, your government, election officials, experts and others ― many of them Republican, including Trump appointed officials ― say that the president’s claims are false and unsubstantiated,” he told viewers.

USA Freedom of the Press under threat: Trump threatens to block networks from hosting debates after Dems reject Fox - by Tal Axelrod

President Trump on Wednesday responded to the Democratic National Committee refusing to let Fox News host a Democratic primary debate by threatening to "do the same thing" with other networks during the general election.

"Democrats just blocked @FoxNews from holding a debate. Good, then I think I'll do the same thing with the Fake News Networks and the Radical Left Democrats in the General Election debates!" Trump tweeted Wednesday.
Trump has maintained a bitter relationship with the press since the campaign trail, often painting mainstream media outlets as "fake news" following critical coverage of himself or his administration.

The president alone would not have the power to prevent outlets from hosting a general election debate.

Note EU-Digest: Be it the Republicans, the Democrats or the President, neither one should meddle in how the news media  wants to do their reporting - that is all part of freedom of the press

Sweden: What America Can Learn from Sweden About Combatting Fake News - by Nina Mast

In 2016, the story of a juvenile sex crime in an Idaho town swept through the national right-wing media ecosystem, picking up fabricated and lurid details along the way; several months later, the newly inaugurated President Donald Trump falsely suggested that a terrorist attack had recently taken place in Sweden, baffling the country. The two incidents, though seemingly unrelated, were spurred by the same sentiment: rabid anti-immigrant bias fueled by a sensationalistic, right-wing fake news ecosystem.

Misinformation about the case was initially spurred by anti-Muslim activist groups, such as ACT for Americaand Refugee Resettlement Watch, as well as anti-Muslim media figures and various white nationalists who had been seemingly preparing for an incident to exploit in Twin Falls since a local paper reported in early 2015 that the city would soon be accepting Syrian refugees. After the incident, far-right websites including Breitbart, Infowars, The Drudge Report, The Rebel

Media, WorldNetDaily, and fake news website MadWorldNews ran with the story, fabricating new details for which there was no evidence, including that the young boys were Syrian (they weren’t), held the girl at knifepoint (they didn’t), and their families celebrated afterward (they didn’t).

In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, Breitbart produced daily content on the story and sent its lead investigative reporter, Lee Stranahan, to investigate the “Muslim takeover” of the town. Infowars attempted to link the assault to Chobani, an immigrant-owned yogurt company that employs several hundred refugees, in a report headlined “Idaho Yogurt Maker Caught Importing Migrant Rapists.” Chobani sued Jones over the claim, and eventually settled; Jones issued an apology and a retraction. The story also bled into mainstream conservative news.

Former Fox host Bill O’Reilly claimed the national media chose to not cover the local crime story because they “want[ed] to protect the refugee community.” O’Reilly pushed the narrative that sexual assault is committed frequently by Muslim refugees, saying, “the cultural aspect of the story is valid” in response to a Fox News contributor claiming that “we're seeing sexual assaults happen across the world from refugee populations” in Germany and Norway

In the case of Twin Falls, many commenters explicitly extrapolated the mythical migrant crime wave of Europe to the American heartland. The Times quoted one American woman writing, “My girl is blond and blue-eyed. ... I am extremely worried about her safety.” It is therefore not surprising that the vast majority of Trump voters think illegal immigration is a very serious problem for the country, particularly in the context of crime. And thanks to “alt-right” outlets like Breitbart, which consistently use crime in Europe to fearmonger about immigration into the U.S., local crime can have policy implications across continents. As the so-called “alt-right” attempts to expand its reach internationally, these high-profile crime stories are powerful fodder.

What's happening in Sweden is what's happening in sleepy towns in the United States. The ideologies, tactics, and goals are all the same. There will be another case like the Twin Falls assault and another story like that of the Swedish church, and in the context of a media landscape eager to exploit these situations and a presidential administration that encourages xenophobia and has deep ties to the far-right and a burgeoning fake news ecosystem, the impact of the next viral story could be much worse.

In order to confront the problem of anti-immigrant sentiment flamed by misinformation and fake news, mainstream media and governments alike need to be realistic about the challenges and possible solutions. In a recent report released by the Swedish government, the authors noted, “One important question is where the limit is for which expressions are harmful to society in large and its citizens.” It’s a question that may never have a perfect answer, but seeking to understand the ecosystem and its players, ideologies, relationships, and methods is a good start.

USA: Barack Obama evokes Nazi Germany in plea to voters

Barack Obama Speech: "If the shoe fits wear it Donad Trump"
Conservative commentators have hit out at former US President Barack Obama after he evoked Nazi Germany in a bid to encourage voters to remain vigilant and protect democracy.

"We get complacent and assume that things continue as they have been, just automatically, and they don't," Obama said in comments to the Economic Club of Chicago earlier this week. Videos of the event were shared on social media.

"You have to tend to this garden of democracy — otherwise, things can fall apart fairly quickly. And we've seen societies where that happens," he added, referring to the late 1920 and 1930s.
\
"Now, presume there was a ballroom here in Vienna in the late 1920s or 30s that looked pretty sophisticated and seemed as if it, filled with the music and art and literature and science that was emerging, would continue into perpetuity," Obama said.

"And then 60 million people died. An entire world was plunged into chaos. So you've got to pay attention and vote." About 60 million people died in World War II.

Images of the speech were shared on Twitter by some of the 1,800 attendees — mostly business leaders in the Chicago area.

Conservative commentators seized on the comments as inappropriately comparing current US President Donald Trump to the mass-murdering fascist Adolf Hitler. Obama never mentioned Trump or Hitler by name.

Fox News commentator Jesse Watters said the comparison was "horrible."

"I thought Obama was better than this. To compare his successor to Adolf Hitler. Horrible. Horrible. Just demeaning. Beneath him," he said in a discussion on The Five talk show.

Note EU-Digest: Fox News Commentators apparently "overlooked the fact" that Obama never mentioned Trump or Hitler by name during this presentation - this seems to underscore the saying "if the shoe fits wear it" .

USA: Hannity of Fox News: "Deep state's massive effort to destroy Trump"

Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Friday night slammed news outlets like The New York Times and CNN as “willing accomplices” for the deep state that is intent on damaging President Trump’s presidency by leaking, in many cases, misinformation to the American public.

“The major news outlets, citing unnamed sources, “have all gotten it wrong on this issue,” Hannity said. “They all, at this point with the American public, should have zero credibility.”

The “deep state,” an alleged shadowy network of powerful entrenched federal and military interests, has increasingly become the focus of Republicans who accuse such forces of trying to undermine the new president. Though senior White House staff members don’t use the exact label, the notion behind it has taken hold.

To Trump’s critics, these assertions come off as paranoid fear of a non-existent shadow government and an effort to create a scapegoat for the White House’s struggles. But to Trump’s supporters, this represents an overdue challenge to an elite ruling class concerned only with maintaining its own grasp on power.

Hannity said the public should take these “smoking gun” reports that appear to break every night “with a grain of salt.”

Note EU-Digest: Total nonsense by Fox News. President Trump shoots himself in the foot over and over again and he himself is his number one enemy.

Sweden and Fox News: Swedes puzzled over Swedish 'security adviser' on Fox News

A transatlantic wave of puzzlement is rippling across Sweden for the second time in a week, after a prominent Fox News program featured a "Swedish defence and national security adviser" who's unknown to the country's military and foreign-affairs officials.

Swedes, and some Americans, have been wondering about representations of the Nordic nation in the U.S. since President Donald Trump invoked "what's happening last night in Sweden" while alluding to past terror attacks in Europe during a rally Feb. 18. There hadn't been any major incident in Sweden the previous night.

Then, Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly convened an on-air faceoff Thursday over Swedish immigration and crime between a Swedish newspaper reporter and a man identified on screen and verbally as a "Swedish defence and national security adviser," Nils Bildt.

Note EU-Digest: Fox News also called by some as the number one US fake TV News Station, but often quoted by US President Donald Trump as a very reliable news source.

France: Paris mayor says much to learn from US melting pot

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said Wednesday at the White House that promoting “a more inclusive city” would help counter radicalisation.

She also confirmed a defamation suit against Fox News for saying areas of Paris were "no-go zones" for non-Muslims.

Hidalgo is among representatives of 60 countries attending the three-day summit on countering violent extremism, which has been in the pipelines for months but acquired greater significance after recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Copenhagen.

On Wednesday, she told delegates in the US capital that cities such as Paris should aim for “the exact opposite of the no-go zones dreamed up by certain parties”, referring to last month’s widely ridiculed claim by Fox News that there are parts of Paris where police and non-Muslims fear to tread.

Hidalgo, 55, later confirmed that the French capital had filed a legal complaint against the US television channel for defamation. “I cannot let a lie of such gravity go unpunished,” she told reporters. “Paris is a city of opportunities, progressive and humanist.”

France: Paris mayor to sue Fox News over ‘no-go zones’ slur

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo told CNN on Tuesday that her city intends to sue Fox News after it broadcasted interviews asserting that there are “no-go zones” in the French capital where police and non-Muslims fear to tread.

"When we're insulted, then I think we'll have to sue, I think we'll have to go to court, in order to have these words removed," Paris’s Socialist mayor said. "The image of Paris has been prejudiced, and the honour of Paris has been prejudiced."

Hidalgo’s comments come despite an apology from Fox news following its incendiary interview with “National Security expert” Nolan Peterson in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks, in which he claimed that certain districts of Paris were comparable with Baghdad.

A slanderous attack by the Murdoch Media Empire on Europe's right to self determination through their Fox News mouthpiece

Fox news, a member of the Murdoch news empire says in its banner headline today: "Why the death of Europe is America's opportunity".

And Fox news vcontinueswith more slander from Arthur Hermana, who writes: "Elections Sunday in France and Greece prove once and for all that the European Union is headed off the cliff, and its voters don’t care.

In the short term, that’s going to mean some heartburn in US markets and global financial centers.  No one likes to watch a major portion of the world’s industrialized economies, commit suicide. But in the long term, the death of Europe offers a huge opportunity for the United States—and a vindication of our free market system.

By “Europe” I don’t mean the collection of nation-states which were once the driving engines of Western civilization, and home to our own culture and science.  I mean the great socialist empire known as the European Union which the Maastricht Treaty created in 1992, at the end of the Cold War–another war, by the way America won for Western Europe, and which it did nothing to bring out.

Well, no great empire has ever collapsed as swiftly and decisively as this one. President Obama was probably too busy doing his victory laps on the anniversary of the killing of Usama bin Laden to notice, but the centralized Europe he and other American liberals saw as a model for transforming the United States, is in a state of free fall.

The great hope of the EU was that by giving up the “outdated” idea of national sovereignty and submitting to the rule of faceless bureaucrats, Europe would emerge as a united federation as strong as the United States, but with a “progressive” central government more like the old Soviet Union: one that would guide society toward greater vistas of prosperity, equality, and justice.

Yes, we have our own mountain of debt and reckless spending, and sputtering private sector growth.  But while Europe’s economies stare into the abyss, we’re poised to become the world’s new center for energy (thanks to shale oil and gas),  advanced manufacturing, and wireless and high tech innovation. Even with Wall Street’s hands fettered by the rules imposed by Congress’s Dodd-Frank legislation, look for a capital flight from Europe to America.  Once a Republican president and Congress repeal Dodd-Frank as well as ObamaCare, don’t be surprised if that flight becomes a flood.

With Europe collapsing, China stumbling, and India and Brazil retreating from full free market reform, we’re the last stable, pro-growth economy left."

The above report is not only pure US Republican/T-Party propaganda and BS,  it's also an insult to Europe, the US's most important trading party.  Hopefully the clamps applied by the British Justice system on the Murdoch Media Empire as a result of their wire tapping and other misdeeds,  involving political, well known personalities and ordinary citizens, will also be followed-up in America by the US judicial system,

Communications Industry: Rupert Murdoch's Fox broadcast licences targeted by US ethics group - Ed Pilkington and Dominic Rushe

A Washington-based ethics watchdog is calling on federal regulators to revoke News Corporation's 27 Fox broadcast licences in the wake of the highly critical report on phone hacking from the UK parliament.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (Crew) has written to the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Julius Genachowski, calling on the regulator to pull the plug on Rupert Murdoch's lucrative television licences on grounds of character.
The letter argues that the final report of the UK Commons culture, media and sport committee, which concluded that Murdoch was not fit to run a major international company, had implications for the US regulators that they had now to act upon.

Melanie Sloan, Crew's director, said that the Murdochs had clearly failed the character test that is embedded within US media law as it is within British. "If they are not passing the character standard under British law, it seems to me that they are not going to meet the character standard in America."

Wall Street, Financial Market Traders - Its Not About You Or Rescue Packages - Its About Making Money For Themselves

People who believe Wall Street or the Financial Industry give one damn about the interest of the shareholder or for that matter the interest of any country, think again.  They don't. Specially today, the enormous volatility in the market is a day-traders wet dream. Due to today's market volatility, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a stock making a 10%-40% move in one day. You've got large numbers of companies stock like Goldman Sachs, making 30% moves in a few days. One often doesn't realize how incredible that is, major stocks like those mentioned aren't supposed to move like that, they're supposed to be steady, safe investments.

Today selling high, buying low and making a killing on the margins is the name of the game. Unfortunately most, if not all of the profits go into the traders and their company's pocket, not  in that of the shareholder.
Working in the financial Industry has also become extremely popular. Economics and Finance students at Cornell University say its a well known fact that after five years on Wall Street, you could expect to be making half a million a year in salary and bonuses; after 10 years you could expect a million or more.

Unfortunately as the size of the financial industry grew, the original purpose of banking to allocate capital to its most productive uses has been forgotten not only by the bankers, but probably by the public as well. According to Jeff Madrick, who wrote "The Age of Greed: The Triumph of Finance and the Decline of America, 1920 to the Present", the current system that pushes the socially beneficial goals of the industry to the periphery only encourages greed. Now, banking shifts money around the world while rarely increasing market efficiency.

Financial advisors in major trading companies enjoy dealing with derivatives and often funneling income to offshore holding companies, so rich people and corporations don't have to pay taxes. These trading companies have lawyers on retainer in the Cayman Islands and Jersey – and a quick phone call to them will set it all  up, no more taxes for their clients. This is not what the financial industry should be doing, this is basically criminal behavior.

Like one Wall Street analyst said: "Governments don't control today's world, Goldman Sachs does."

To prove the above point also see the BBC news clip "Financial Armageddon Imminent 2011"

Rupert Murdoch's Dangerous Right Wing Media Empire

Within five months after Rupert Murdoch took over the Wall Street Journal he fired the editor and installed his close friend Robert Thomson, following his assignment where he had also Foxified The Times of London. The new publisher was Leslie Hinton, former boss of the division that published Murdoch’s British newspapers, including The News of the World, who resigned last Friday for his alleged cover-ups. The changes are now very apparent in the Wall Street Journal: shorter articles, less depth, an increased emphasis on politics and at times even unsophisticated coverage of business.

Along with this rapid transformation of the prestigious Wall Street Journal into a mediocre publication also came changes that were far more devious. The political articles grew more and more slanted toward the Republican party line. The Wall Street Journal at times even took to using the word “Democrat” as an adjective instead of a noun, a usage favored by the right wing.

Unfortunately for the people who oppose Murdoch and want to see him jailed, he also has a large number of "fans" around the world, including well known media personalities, like Piers Morgan, the former editor for Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World. Piers Morgan dedicated a segment of his new CNN show last night to defending Rupert Murdoch. In this show he included former New York Post reporter Vicky Ward, who is a personal friend of Murdoch's.

Despite all his pretended faith in the free-market, Murdoch’s success has always owed much to his uncanny ability to align himself with governments that were able to dole out lucrative broadcasting and cable monopolies. Not just in China but in the West as well, Murdoch has been an expert practitioner of crony capitalism.

Rupert Murdoch is also a typical right-wing populist who knows that the road of success for plutocrats is to wear the mask of plebian outrage, pretending to be the voice of the very people they are economically exploiting.

Britain: The questions hanging over Murdoch, USA - by Amy Goodman and Denis Moynihan

The contagion affecting News Corp has spread rapidly in the US. The FBI is investigating potential criminal hacking of the voicemails of victims of the 9/11 attacks. Lawmakers and grassroots groups are also calling for an investigation into whether the bribing of police was a violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. As News Corp is a US corporation, registered in the business-friendly state of Delaware, even bribery abroad could lead to felony charges in the US.

One likely consequence would be what Corporate Crime Reporter's Russell Mokhiber calls "a wishy-washy non-prosecution settlement" wherein News Corp would admit to the crime without being convicted, and pay a financial settlement. Mokhiber noted that, in a 2008 FCPA case against Siemens for widespread bribery, Siemens paid $800m but avoided a criminal conviction that would have jeopardised its standing as a US defense contractor.

Meanwhile Murdoch runs his media empire in the US as an unvarnished political operation. Fox News Channel, run by career Republican operative Roger Ailes, is home to the most consistently vitriolic critics of Barack Obama. Leaked memos and emails from Fox vice-president of News, John Moody, and Washington managing editor Bill Sammon allegedly offer evidence of top-down directives to control the message throughout the news day, from linking Obama to Marxism and socialism, to denigrating a public option in the US healthcare debate, to promoting scepticism about climate change.
