Dominican Republic: Air Europe fills Iberia’s Dominican Republic-Spain vacuum
The airline Air Europe, of the group Globalia, and the government agreed to double the connections to Dominican Republic’s airports starting April 1, when Iberia will stop flying to the Caribbean country, EFE reports from Madrid.
The agreement comes after a phone conversation between president Danilo Medina and Globalia president Juan Jose Hidalgo, who guaranteed the carrier’s links with Madrid and the flow of Spanish tourists to the country.
On 7 December Iberia announced it will no longer operate the route Madrid-Santo Domingo, as well as Havana starting April 1, as part of the company’s plan, which includes, among other measures, halting unprofitable routes.
Hidalgo said Globalia is committed to adding flights, which would be uploaded into the reservation system as soon as tomorrow, for which Air Europe’s one daily flight to the Dominican Republic, will jump to 14 times a week to Santo Domingo as of April, from Madrid's Barajas, at noon and at night daily. Punta Cana will be connected to Madrid by seven weekly flights and special flights to Puerto Plata during the high season.

European Airline Industry: Iberia to cut 4,500 jobs to stay alive - by Ben Perry
Iberia is to shed 4,500 jobs to save Spain's biggest airline from collapse and more may follow amid the economic crisis in the indebted eurozone nation, parent group International Airlines Group said Friday.
"Iberia is in (a) fight for survival," the carrier's chief executive Rafael Sanchez-Lozano said in a statement issued by IAG, which also owns British Airways.
"It is unprofitable in all its markets. We have to take tough decisions now to save the company and return it to profitability.
"Unless we take radical action to introduce permanent structural change the future for the airline is bleak. However this plan gives us a platform to turn the business around and grow," he added.
Sanchez-Lozano said "the Spanish and European economic crisis has impacted on Iberia, but its problems are systemic and pre-date the country's current difficulties."
