USA -Minimum wage: McDonald’s CEO: ‘We Pay Fair Wages’- by Barbara Tasch

McDonald’s CEO said today Thursday his company’s employees are paid fairly and that they are provided opportunities leading to “real careers,” the Associated Press reports. 

CEO Don Thompson’s comments, delivered at a shareholders’ meeting, come after more than 100 people were arrested Wednesday for refusing to leave McDonald’s property in Chicago during protests over pay and McDonald’s strategy of marketing to children.

The chain previously had to close one of its buildings in Oak Brook, Illinois where the protests were initially planned.

Thursday wasn’t the first time McDonald’s child-marketing tactics have been brought up at a shareholder meeting. However, it’s becoming more of a problem for the company as sales in the U.S. have slowed amid new competition and changing eating habits.

The CEO defended his company, even saying his own children eat McDonald’s food. “We are people. We do have values at McDonald’s. We are parents,” he said. He also emphasized the quality of the ingredients used by the chain.

KFC and McDonnald: Snacks spark cancer scare

Potato fries sold by fast food giants KFC and McDonald's contain a substance suspected of causing cancer, the Consumer Council revealed yesterday.

The consumer watchdog warned that nearly all 90 samples of potato chips, biscuits and other snacks it tested from a number of manufacturers contained the chemical compound acrylamide, which is probably carcinogen.
Acrylamide is known to have caused cancer in animals, and has been classified as "probably carcinogenic to humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

KFC restaurants have made earlier  headlines for having some pretty foul hygienic issues, and the company has been sued by the Center for Science in the Public Interest for using startlingly high amounts of artery-clogging trans fats,

Happy Meals cause McDonald’s Lawsuit

Healthy eating habits have been a much debated issue in the United States for some time now. More and more Americans are trying to lead a healthy life style in order to prolong their life and keep away food related diseases. In an attempt to eliminate unhealthy food or the so called junk food from children’s lives, the Center for Science in the Public Interest Files has filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s. Mc Donald’s Happy Meals have been under constant attack from nutritionists during the years but never went to court until now. The Center is accusing McDonalds’s of using toys inside Happy Meals to draw more children into unhealthy eating.

Among Her Majesty's Queen Elizabeth II most recent acquisitions was a retail park in Slough - which encompasses a drive-through McDonalds. Bath Road Retail Park was purchased in June by the Crown Estate, which administers the monarch's property portfolio, for euro 100 million. The site, which is visible from the Queen's State Apartments at Windsor Castle, is also home to a B&Q superstore, and branches of Comet, JJB Sports and Mothercare. But it seems unlikely that the Royal taste buds will be tempted by the fare on offer too often. The purchase will be good news for shops in these times of uncertainty, because having the Queen as landlady means the future of the site is secure.
