Nanowires and carbon nanotubes are proving valuable for generating and storing energy. Researchers have shown that nanowires can convert vibrations into electricity.Theorists have predicted a new class of materials that could render objects invisible. The materials work because they interact with light in unusual ways. Now a number of researchers are beginning to put those theories into practice, making rudimentary invisibility cloaks by controlling the micro- and nanostructure of materials. In addition to making things disappear, such materials could be useful for patterning tiny features for computer chips or for novel antennae for communications.Teflon pans are easy to clean. But a new super self-cleaning material actually causes oil to bounce off. Another material--this one transparent--could be used to keep windows fog and oil free. Other researchers are developing supersticky materials. They have made structures out of carbon nanotubes that are like the structures on geckos' feet that allow the lizards to climb walls. They've also made glues similar to the proteins that allow mussels to stick to nearly anything, even underwater. Electronics patterned on flexible substrates that could be used for roll-up displays have previously been demonstrated in the lab. Now products are on the way.

Nanotechnology to boost Europe's economy - by Katie Bird

According to European Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik, the applications of nanotechnology are so wide they will play an important role in Europe's economic future.Although many feel the technology offers significant advances in the field it has come under criticism from consumers, and certain regulatory and research bodies, which believe more should be known about the safety of the technology before it appears in consumer goods.

Nanotechnology gains ground in Czech Republic

The emerging nanotechnology field is gaining ground in the Czech Republic with successes reported by local researchers and the commercial sector. To ensure continued development in the new science, VŠB–Technical University of Ostrava (VŠB-TU), North Moravia, is launching the first program in nanotechnology in the Czech Republic, and other universities are also starting courses.

Although none of the countries in the Central and Eastern European region is significantly ahead of the Czech Republic in nanotechnology education, the country “shouldn’t rest on its laurels as things are moving ahead also in other countries in CEE,“ said Alexandr Prokop of the TCAS CR. Prokop is the national contact point for the nanotechnology and space technology sections of the European Union’s research & development (R&D) programs.

Does the future of computing lie in nanotechnology? It’s always possible. There is an ongoing trend, after all, for computers to get smaller and smaller, cramming increasing performance power and storage into smaller physical footprints.Nanotechnology, which Wikipedia defines as “the control of matter on a scale smaller than 100 nanometers, as well as the fabrication of devices on this same length scale,” has very broad applications, spanning a myriad of disciplines including colloidal science, chemistry, applied physics, materials science, and mechanical/electrical engineering.

Just how much interest has nanotech gained globally? Research and consultancy firm RNCOS in a recent study—citing data from a British analyst—said that worldwide funding for nanotech research in 2004 reached $8.6 billion, and this number continues to grow. A more recent report from Lux Research put the 2006 figure for worldwide nanotech research and development at $12.4 billion, with more than $50 billion worth of nano-enabled products sold.
