In the turquoise waters of the Red Sea, Israeli, Emirati and Bahraini naval forces for the first time just days ago rehearsed joint security operations with a US warship.
It followed a war-game at a desert airbase just north of the Israeli port city of Eilat last month, which sent fighter planes from Israel and seven other countries roaring into the skies.
Such drills aim to send a strong warning to Iran, which has recently been holding its own large military exercises, and stress strategic alliances.

Sable Rattling: China and Russia combine naval forces in the Baltic Sea
According to NATO, a Chinese destroyer, frigate and supply ship sailed into the Russian harbor at Baltijsk
located on the Baltic coast of the Russian exclave Kaliningrad on
Friday. They are there to participate in joint naval maneuvers with
Russia being dubbed "Maritime Cooperation 2017," which is set to
last from July 24 to July 27.
This joint naval maneuver with Russia in the Baltic Sea is the latest display of China's geopolitical ambition as Beijing wants to increase its influence in international and strategic affairs.
China's emphasis on naval expansion is a sign of Beijing's awareness that becoming a world power first entails being a maritime power. For Russia, the maneuvers are a continuation of aggressive foreign policy and a display of strength on Europe's doorstep and the Baltic coast, where fears of Russian expansion are highest.

West Africa: Naval Exercises East Saharan Express 2014 have begu
Naval forces from the United States along with African and European
maritime partners on Thursday March 6 commenced the fourth annual multinational
exercise Saharan Express 2014.
The exercise, being held in waters off West Africa, is an at-sea maritime exercise designed to improve cooperation, tactical expertise and information sharing practices among participating nations in order to increase maritime safety and security in the region.
The week-long exercise will take place in two areas near the coasts of Cape Verde and Senegal. There will be an in port preparatory phase and then the 11 participating ships will go to sea to test maritime security skills.
“Over the course of the next two weeks, we will work on interoperability, communications, coordination and familiarization. More than that, though, we will work to come together more closely as a team linked by the common purpose of ensuring regional maritime security,” said Capt. John Tokarewich, Saharan Express 2014 exercise director, in remarks during an opening ceremony in Dakar. “Through cooperation on events like Saharan Express, we are able to provide a more robust and unified team to ensure regional maritime security.”
