 A new report says wind energy in Pennsylvania is yielding environmental benefits by saving water and avoiding pollution that contributes to climate change.

The report released Wednesday by the environmentalist group PennEnvironment says Pennsylvania’s two dozen wind farms annually save nearly 600 million gallons of water that otherwise would be needed to cool power plants.

The report says the use of wind energy in Pennsylvania last year avoided emissions of more than 1,200 tons of smog-causing nitrogen oxides and more than 1,500 tons of sulfur dioxide that causes acid rain and soot.

State Sen. Daylin Leach, a Montgomery County Democrat who’s running for Congress next year, says development of wind energy should be encouraged because it creates jobs while preserving natural resources.

Hundreds of people from across North America are expected to flood Saylorsburg PA on Saturday to protest a controversial Turkish figure, Fethullah Gülen, who has lived in the area for more than a decade.

A Turkish couple in Florida said they began circulating a flier on social media two weeks ago, encouraging people to come to the Poconos to protest a man they say is a danger to the U.S. and their home country. The protest is set for 1 p.m. by Gülen's home and retreat center on Mount Eaton Road.

Gülen is a polarizing figure and Turkish cleric whose vision of Islam embraces science, education and interfaith dialogue. Millions support him, but his critics in Turkey's secular establishment believe he is a dangerous man with a secret religious agenda.

The protest comes on the heels of weeks of conflict on the streets of several Turkish cities against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who the couple claims is Gülen's puppet.

Turkish citizens first poured into the streets of Istanbul in May as protests began over a plan to redevelop a green space in the city. The protest spread to other cities as it grew into a larger movement against Turkish PM Erdogan and what some secular Turks see as his Islamist agenda and limitation of freedoms.

On a Facebook page about the protest, the event had 360 people listed to attend as of Tuesday afternoon.

"The protest will be peaceful and our message is clear, the USA should not shelter or host politically dangerous people like Gülen while it is fighting other extremists all over the world," the Facebook page says.

According to the page, the program for the protest will include the U.S. and Turkish national anthems, a moment of silence for anyone killed fighting extremists or in the war on terror, and information on Gülen.

"There will be buses coming from different states,"said  Eda Yilmaz one of the organizers who lives in Florida and supports the anti-Erdogan movement..

This might be remembered as the week that reality trumped the Super Bowl. In ordinary times, the week before the Super Bowl is all buildup to the big game. The media is abuzz as national and international press descend on Super Bowl City to generate colorful features about fashion, food and celebrity-filled fun.

But this past week has been anything but ordinary. Look out your window and you see evidence of the extraordinary times North Texans have been slip-sliding through — ice and frigid temperatures for several days, topped by a blanket of snow on Friday. And instead of Super Bowl frivolity filling television screens all week, news broadcasts have been a continuous stream of images of Egypt erupting in street warfare. That is, when they weren’t showing the snow-swept effects of the “monster storm” that blew over 30 states and 100 million people, shutting down airports and burying city streets.

The result: Reality has upstaged the showiest show of the year in America, the Super Bowl. Not the game itself, which, pitting two tradition-rich teams, has all the makings of a classic match-up. What has been upstaged is the Mardi Gras-style, made-for-media event of the days building up to the Super Bowl. If there are 12 days of Christmas, there are at least five or six days of Super Bowl. “In the best of times, the Super Bowl is a national obsession,” said Adam Hanft, social trends expert and co-author of Dictionary of the Future. “But we’ve been in this huge, intense news cycle — not just Egypt and the storm but also the shootings in Tucson, the debate over health care.

"I think Hillary could win by 5 to 12 points," Gov. Rendell told me as he shook hands and posed for photos. "But even if she wins by 6 or 7, that would be tremendous, considering the record levels of money that the Obama campaign has spent in Pennsylvania." Here Rendell was clearly tempering any lingering expectations of a Hillary rout, and hewing to campaign talking points about the $2.2 million-a-week ad habit Obama reportedly developed here in Pennsylvania, a budget that made him the highest political spender in state history, including Rendell himself. Rendell also spoke about what makes Pennsylvania such a potential sweet spot for Clinton, recalling that both Clintons banked goodwill in the 1990s by supporting his turnaround of Philadelphia as mayor. The Clinton administration sent his city gobs of federal money. Then there's the state's mix of high-tech and traditional manufacturing jobs. "We've been hurt by trade," said Rendell. "Not as much as Ohio or Michigan, but we've been hurt, and we have a lot of blue-collar workers who love her." Rendell also noted Pennsylvania's "strong feminist movement" (huh!) and the fact that it's the third oldest state in the union (Clinton does great with the olds).

When explaining their preference for Clinton their reasons often had to do with her experience, or a sense that she was a woman of action. Psychologist Ziona Brotleit, 57, wore a T-shirt that said "A Century of Women on Top," and praised Clinton's brains. "What impresses me is that she has the information, the knowledge, and that she can speak about more specific information than her opponent is able to," she said. "And that's what I want, someone who can think."
