USA: Cohen and Manafort Will Only Make Trump Stronger - by Peter Roff

It was entertaining to watch the pundits on cable news start to salivate as news broke Tuesday that an Alexandria, Virginia jury had found former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort guilty on eight of the 18 counts with which he’d been charged by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

If ever there was a day to see the media has a rooting interest in seeing Donald Trump go down, this was it. Some commentators seemed almost giddy as they reported Manafort guilty on five counts of tax fraud, one count of hiding foreign bank accounts, and two counts of bank fraud as though, somehow, this finding was the certain first step down the road toward removing the president from office.

It’s important to note, at this juncture, that all the crimes of which Manafort was accused—including the ten in which the jury could not reach a verdict and for which federal judge T.S. Ellis declared a mistrial—had everything to do with his lobbying work and not a thing to do with anything related to his role as a Trump campaign official.

The president, surprisingly, seemed nonplussed by it all.

USA-Russia Probe: Trump asks if firing means end to Russia probe -

President Donald Trump is questioning whether special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and Trump’s presidential campaign will be dropped now that the FBI has fired one of Mueller’s former investigators.

Former agent Peter Strzok’s lawyer said Monday that he had been fired from the agency over texts from that were critical of Trump. Mueller removed Strzok from his team immediately last year once the texts were discovered.

Trump has repeatedly been critical of Mueller and Strzok on Twitter in attempts to discredit the investigation. There is no indication that the probe will be dropped.

The president tweeted that “the list of bad players in the FBI & DOJ gets longer & longer,” adding that the investigation is a “total hoax.”

The Netherlands: Dutch Lawyer linked to ex-Trump campaign chairman sentenced to 30 days in jail - by Sarah N. Lynch

Alex van der Zwaan (left) sentenced
for lying to Special Counsel Mueller
The Dutch son-in-law of one of Russia's richest men was sentenced on Tuesday to 30 days in prison and fined $20,000 for lying to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigators about contacts with an official in President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.

Alex van der Zwaan, a lawyer who once worked closely with Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, was also sentenced to two months of supervised release and said he was sorry for what he did.

He pleaded guilty on Feb. 20 as Mueller intensified his investigation into potential collusion between the president's campaign and Russia, and told prosecutors he lied to FBI agents about previous communications with Rick Gates, a Manafort protege who held a senior position in the Trump campaign.

"What I did was wrong. I apologize to this court, and I apologize to my wife," van der Zwaan said at the hearing.

Van der Zwaan, 33, previously worked for the law firm Skadden Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom and is married to the daughter of prominent Russian billionaire German Khan, founder of the privately owned Alfa Bank.

The couple is expecting their first child later this year.

USA - Russian Probe: Conservatives introduce measure demanding Mueller’s resignation - by K. Cheney

Three House Republicans on Friday moved to pressure special counsel Robert Mueller to resign over what they contend are “obvious conflicts of interest,” the latest instance of rising GOP resistance to his Russia probe.

Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), introduced a measure that, while nonbinding, would put the House on record describing Mueller, a former FBI director, as unfit to lead the probe because of his relationship with James Comey, his successor at the bureau.

“[B]e it Resolved, That House of Representatives expresses its sense that Robert Mueller is compromised and should resign from his special counsel position immediately,” the resolution states.

USA - Russia Investigation: Robert Mueller’s Office Will Serve First Indictment Monday - by K,DILANIAN, P.HELSEL and P.MCCAUSLAND

A federal grand jury in Washington has approved the first criminal charges in the special counsel’s investigation into Russian election interference, two sources told NBC News, marking a significant milestone in an inquiry that has roiled Donald Trump’s presidency.

Robert Mueller's Office of the Special Counsel will make public an indictment on Monday, a U.S. official with firsthand knowledge of the process confirmed to NBC News, without disclosing the name of the target or the nature of the charges. The timing was confirmed by a second source familiar with the matter. CNN was the first to report on Friday that the grand jury approved charges, citing multiple sources.

The network added that the charges remain sealed by order of a federal judge. Peter Carr, a spokesperson for Mueller, declined to comment Friday night.

Mueller, a former FBI director, was appointed in May as special counsel to oversee the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the election. Former FBI Director James Comey testified to Congress that the FBI began investigating the matter in July 2016, but the investigation picked up steam after Trump took office in January.
