Scotland to request new independence referendum

Scottish first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, on Tuesday told the parliament in Edinburgh that she will submit a request to hold another independence referendum in 2020, Bloomberg writes. "This is a watershed moment for Scotland," Sturgeon told lawmakers, adding that this week she will take "the next steps to secure Scotland's right to choose". During the last referendum in 2014, 55 percent of Scots chose to remain in the UK.

Britain - Second Referendum could end drama? UK MPs put second referendum back on agenda

Boris's days as UK's PM could be counted
A cross-party group of British MPs is in the making to bring back one of the Brexit deal proposals of Theresa May, and of organising a second referendum in the last two weeks of October, according to the Guardian.

Not only members of the opposition, but also current and former Conservatives would be open to the idea, amidst worries that PM Boris Johnson is still backing a no-deal Brexit.

Britain: Boris Johnson's Commons majority cut to one as Conservatives lose Welsh seat to Liberal Democrats

Britain's new Prime-Minister Boris Johnson suffered the first serious blow to his leadership on Thursday when his ruling Conservative Party lost a seat in Wales, cutting its working majority in parliament to just one.

The seat in Brecon and Radnorshire was won by Jane Dodds, the candidate for the Liberal Democrats, who overturned a majority of more than 8,000 votes to beat Conservative Chris Davies.

The by-election was triggered when 19% of voters signed a recall petition after Davies was convicted over a false expenses claim.

In her acceptance speech, Dodds said her "victory must be a turning point not just for our communities here in Brecon and Radnorshire but for the whole country too."

"My very first act as your MP when I arrive in Westminster will be to find Boris Johnson, wherever he's hiding and tell him loud and clear: stop playing with the future of our communities and rule out a no-deal Brexit now," she also said.

Davies came in second with the Brexit Party helmed by Nigel Farage securing the third place. The main opposition labour party, meanwhile, finished fourth.

Several smaller parties including Plaid Cymru, the Greens and the Independent Group for Change had decided not to field candidates in order not to split the Remain vote.

Adam Price, leader of Plaid Cymru, said on Twitter on Friday morning that "the single most important thing in this byelection was to put party politics aside, and deliver a pro-Remain MP" and called for People's Vote — or second referendum on Brexit.

"But if Boris Johnson is intent on a general election, he should know that Plaid Cymru and the other pro-Remain parties are committed to cooperating so that we can beat Brexit once and for all," he also wrote.

For Boris Johnson, who stormed to the Prime Ministership in a Conservative leadership contest last week, the election was a first electoral test and ultimately a blow.

Britain - Brexit: British MPs reject Brexit deal by 391 to 242 despite May securing changes to backstop - by Alice Tidey & Rachael Kennedy

British lawmakers on Tuesday rejected May's Brexit deal for a second time with 391 votes against, 242 in favour.

MPs first rejected the deal on January 14 by a margin of 230, handing May the worst defeat of any sitting government in British parliamentary history.

The prime minister said immediately after the vote that MPs now face "an unenviable choice" and said she still believes that her deal is the best and only deal available.

May said if lawmakers backed a no-deal Brexit on Wednesday, it would become government policy.

A division list released by the Commons website shows that 75 Conservative MPs rebelled against May.

They were joined by 232 Labour MPs, 17 independent MPs, and every single MPs from Scotland's National party (35), the Liberal Democrats (11) and Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (10)

Bottom ine: the Brexit  deal is clearly dead - and to make any sense of what the British really want, specially now the British Public has become more familiar with what breaking away from the EU and the Common Market would eventually mean to the economy and them, and the danger of becoming totally subservient to the US, is to have a second referendum.

This is the only way to stop this chaos, after the political establishment totally failed the people.  It is high time to put the control of the future of Britain back in the hands of the British people, before the country implodes.

Britain - Brexit: Over half-a-million people call for a second Brexit referendum - by James Dawson

Over half-a-million people have signed a petition calling for people to be given a final say on the government's future Brexit deal, as public sentiment continues to turn against Britain's exit from the European Union.

The campaign for a second referendum - hosted on Change.org - was launched by the Independent newspaper last week alongside an editorial arguing for a second vote. The petition has received 530,000 signatures at the time of writing.

The editorial published in the paper read: "The British people decided to pursue our course in the referendum of 2016, so as we now look for a decision on whether we will like the deal agreed with the EU (assuming there is one), it is natural that those same people should have the final say.
\
“Indeed, given the magnitude of the decision, it would be essential for the British people to be given that final right of approval, even if cabinet and parliament were providing the leadership we need, which they are not.”
