USA: Trump White House Accelerating Toward a Dollar Crisis

Trump administration is considering the expansion of the trade war to finance, which could destabilize the US dollar and derail the post-pandemic global economy.

After its failure in the COVID-19 containment and the expected -53 percent plunge of real GDP growth in the 2 quarter, President Trump’s re-election campaign is in serious trouble. To deflect the blame, his administration has launched a series of provocative measures against China thereby fueling elevated bilateral tensions.

Worse, the White House is reportedly considering moving from a bilateral trade war to an effort to exclude China from the dollar-denominated international payment network. In Beijing, that would be seen as the weaponization of the US dollar.

Created in Brussels in 1973 – after the rise of US deficits, weaker US dollar, and its decoupling from the gold standard – the dollar clearing and settlement system (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, SWIFT) is ostensibly a non-profit organization. Yet, its first CEO was a former executive of American Express and its data centers are in the US, Netherlands, and Switzerland.

According to critics, the SWIFT’s status changed after 9/11, when the Bush administration, true to its unipolar stance on US security and defense, seized the payments network as an added tool in “coercive diplomacy.” In the Trump era, coercive diplomacy has been expanded in US economic engagements.

In the interdependent global economy, international trade and finance are two sides of the same coin. Cross-border trade transactions rely on an effective international payments system and a robust network of financial institutions issuing credit.

That infrastructure remains built around US dollar, which the Trump administration would like to leverage to contain China’s rise.

In the postwar era, the Japanese yen's might peaked in the mid-1980s, when Tokyo agreed to a managed trade deal in New York City's midtown Plaza Hotel. The controversial pact led the US, France, West Germany, the UK and Japan to depreciate US dollar relative to the Japanese yen and Deutsche mark by intervening in the currency markets.

Through the Trump years, China has resisted protectionism and trade wars. But as a defensive measure, Beijing may now be forced to prepare against the risks of being cut off from the US dollar payment system.

Under the US dollar payment system, China remains vulnerable to potential US sanctions.

As long as China holds $1.1 trillion in US treasury bills and large investments that remain denominated in US dollars, exposure remains high. Over time, Beijing can diversify away from some of these bills and investments, while internationalization of the renminbi would reduce reliance on the US dollar.

China is preparing for currency swap facilities as part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) with many Southeast Asian countries.

Similarly, according to a recent report, sovereign wealth funds expect China to remain in the economic driving seat, despite the Trump administration’s cold wars.

Thanks to the long-term potential of Chinese economy and finance, renmibi’s role as a global reserve currency and its rising attractiveness for international transactions, the time is right for accelerated internationalization. As China is now the first major economy to defuse the COVID-19 impact and is rebounding, global demand for renminbi assets is rising.

American billionaires are now nearly 20% richer — by $565 billion,to be exact — than they were at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new report by the Institute for Policy Studies

The coronavirus crisis has been an economic disaster for the rest of America, as an end unprecedented 42.6 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits in the past 11 weeks.

Note EU-Digest: This is another major problem facing America, and has resulted in the overwhelming influence Corporate America has on the political environment of the US and beyound. What's been happening with White House and Congressional politics could only be described as a thoroughly corrupt process, with the blessings of a Supreme Court dominated by justices hand-picked to protect the same process.

USA: Trump's Press briefing today at the White House was one of his worst to say the least

Trump out of control at Press briefing in the White House
What a disaster  was today's Press briefing by Donald Trump.

Among his many Press disasters, probably this one really "hit the spot".

Trump was totally incapable of accepting any critical questions,, and extremely hostile to journalists, who were just doing their job as journalists.

He called many of the journalists incompetent and a variety of other derogatory names.

Another "no-no" was that the White House today showed a Trump campaign propaganda video (at tax payers expense), during the Press briefing.

This has never happened before and as far as we know, is not allowed.

For those who were still in the dark what a narcissist Trump is, today's Press meeting at the White House certainly was an eye-opener.

USA: The Conservative Activists "Comedy Show" at the Donald Trump White House labeled as a "Social Media Summit" was a total farce

As he opened an event that had brought 200 conservative social media firebrands to the White House, President Trump wanted his guests to know just how much he appreciated their work helping shape the online narrative about his presidency and a re-election fight.

“The crap you think of,” Mr. Trump said as he surveyed his Twitter kingdom, “is unbelievable.”

Mr. Trump was once an outsider political candidate who prided himself on bending rules and subverting norms, and he wants to keep that sensibility as a candidate in 2020. So on Thursday, the president went in search of outside-the-box campaign ideas from a group that also has little use for playing by the rules.

Sandwiched between a flurry of morning presidential tweets and bleeding into Mr. Trump’s early evening news conference on how his administration would collect data on citizenship, the White House Social Media Summit was dominated by activists willing to share unverified smears against Democratic presidential candidates, disseminate QAnon conspiracy theories and create memes the president might share.

“Earlier this year, the White House launched a tool to allow Americans, regardless of their political views, to share how they have been affected by bias online,” Judd Deere, a White House spokesman, said in an email explaining the origins of the event. “After receiving thousands of responses, the president wants to engage directly with these digital leaders in a discussion on the power of social media.”

A spotlight on the people reshaping our politics. A conversation with voters across the country. And a guiding hand through the endless news cycle, telling you what you really need to know.

That’s really not what happened.

Before all was said and done, the East Room event, which featured a rambling speech by Mr. Trump on everything from Federal Reserve policy to his hairstyle, devolved into a confrontation in the Rose Garden after the presidential news conference between Sebastian Gorka, the former White House official turned media personality, and a reporter. James O’Keefe, an activist who likes to capture videos under false pretenses to embarrass liberals and journalists, filmed the scene.

The reporter, Brian Karem of Playboy, said that the group was hungry for “demonic possession.” Mr. Gorka questioned his journalistic credentials and approached Mr. Karem, who suggested the two talk outside.

“Gorka! Gorka! Gorka!” his supporters chanted as Mr. Gorka called the journalist a “punk.”

The meeting turned not only in a comedy show, but also showed  that this meeting labeled by the White House as a "Social Media Summit" was a total farce.

USA: White House in Turmoil: Pence and Pompeo Deny Writing Op-Ed Critical of the Trump Administration - by Eileen Sullivan

A day after a senior administration official described President Trump as amoral, impetuous, petty and ineffective in an anonymous essay, the denials from the upper echelon of the administration started to roll in.

The mystery writer is not Vice President Mike Pence, a spokesman said Thursday. “Our office is above such amateur acts,” the vice president’s spokesman, Jarrod Agen, said in a morning Twitter post, referring to the Op-Ed published on Wednesday in The New York Times.

“It is not mine,” Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, said.

“Patently false,” said Dan Coats, the national intelligence director, responding to rumors that he or his principal deputy wrote the piece. “We did not.”

Russia - US Relations: White House confirms Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet

The Russian president was invited when US President Donald Trump telephoned to congratulate him on his election victory in March. The time and place of the encounter have yet to be agreed.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed the call in a press briefing on Monday.

"As the president himself confirmed on March 20, hours after his last call with President Putin, the two had discussed a bilateral meeting in the 'not-too-distant future' at a number of potential venues, including the White House," Sanders said. The administration had no further comment on the matter, she said.

The Kremlin's foreign policy aide, Yuri Ushakov, told reporters on Monday that Trump had suggested meeting at his official presidential residence and workplace in the US capital: "When our presidents spoke on the phone, Trump suggested having the meeting in Washington at the White House,"

Ushakov said. "This is quite an interesting, positive idea," he added.

USA: Is Trump Marriage In Trouble? : Conservative Pundit S.E. Cupp Tells Melania Trump to Leave ‘Jerk' Husband Over Affair Claims - by Tierney McAfee

Conservative pundit S.E. Cupp is calling on First Lady Melania Trump to leave husband Donald Trump over explosive allegations that the now-president cheated with porn star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal in 2006.

Both of Trump’s alleged mistresses spoke out in bombshell interviews this past week, offering up intimate details of the alleged sexual encounters, which they claim took place when Melania was pregnant and shortly after she gave birth to their son, Barron, now 12. The White House has denied both affairs.

During her HLN show on Tuesday, Cupp compared Trump’s alleged affairs to those of then-President Bill Clinton the 1990s and urged Mrs. Trump to do what Hillary Clinton failed to do 20 years ago: “leave her jerk of a husband.”

“While feminists trotted [Hillary Clinton] out as a role model for strong women, all I saw was a woman who was humiliated time and again,” the HLN host said of Clinton’s decision to stand by her husband through multiple sex scandals.

“Melania may not have a political career to consider, but as first lady, she is an inherently important figure in American politics, and women are watching ― particularly young women,” Cupp added. “Melania should do for this generation of girls what Hillary Clinton did not do for mine and leave her jerk of a husband.”

USA: The Rob Porter Story Exposes the White House's Dishonesty, Not Chaos - by David A. Graham

The White House’s response to allegations of domestic violence against former Staff Secretary Rob Porter has so stunned reporters that the whole episode has become an exemplar of the total disorganization of the Trump administration.

“Abuse Case Exposes Fissures in a White House in Turmoil,” The New York Times intones. Axios’s Jonathan Swan writes, “This is crazy. Even in a White House that’s famous for chaos, I’ve never seen anything like this.” Politico’s Playbook simply announced, “CHAOS at 1600 Pennsylvania.”

This is peculiar, not only because it is difficult to imagine what would rise to the level of notable chaos relative to the standards of this White House. It’s strange because the focus on disorder has overshadowed the more salient feature of the moment: Insofar as the administration is engulfed in chaos, it is a result of its inability to tell the truth. The Trump team doesn’t have a chaos problem so much as it has a dishonesty problem. Of course this is not new, either—in fact, the serial dissembling of the White House has become so banal that it goes almost unremarked in this case—yet it is on particularly dramatic display here.

It might be useful to rehearse the basic chronology. Early last week, the Daily Mail reported on allegations of physical and verbal abuse lodged against Porter by his two ex-wives. Tuesday night, Chief of Staff John Kelly issued a statement standing firmly behind Porter, who worked closely with both Kelly and the president. Wednesday morning, The Intercept published photos showing a black eye Porter had allegedly given one ex-wife, Colbie Holderness. Later that day, Porter resigned. The time since has seen investigation and recrimination about who knew what. Both of Porter’s ex-wives had told the FBI about their allegations during the background-check process, and White House Counsel Don McGahn reportedly knew about allegations as early as January 2017. Politico reports Kelly also knew of a 2010 protective order against Porter this fall. The White House had also learned, well before the Daily Mail stories, that the FBI would recommend Porter not be given security clearance. (The FBI’s recommendation is non-binding on the president.

The president, with his prodigious capacity for pumping out nonsense, may be the wellspring of the White House’s honesty problem, but he is not alone. The Times reports that one factor in Kelly’s recent struggles is the loss of his deputy Kirstjen Nielsen, who was tapped to succeed him as secretary of Homeland Security: “Ms. Nielsen frequently blocked and tackled for the chief of staff, making herself the main line of approach to him. Without her, officials often approach Mr. Kelly freely now, and he sometimes does not remember what he has said to different people, two officials said.”

Telling conflicting things to different people is indeed likely to sow chaos, but chaos is only a product. It’s much easier to avoid telling conflicting stories if one sticks to the truth.
