China is planning the world’s largest wind farm, a facility so huge it could power the whole of Norway.

Chaozhou - a city in China’s Guangdong province - has revealed ambitious plans for a 43.3 gigawatt facility in the Taiwan Strait.

Operating between 75 and 185 kilometres offshore, the 10km long farm will feature thousands of powerful turbines.

Because of the windy location, these turbines will be able to run between 43 per cent and 49 per cent of the time.

Striking a blow for wind power

Nineteen miles off the coast of mainland Denmark, 91 turbines reach 114 meters above the turbulent waters of the North Sea. Together they form Horns Rev 2, the world's biggest offshore wind farm, which can generate enough electrify to power 200,000 homes.

Anders Eldrup is CEO of Dong Energy, which operates Horns Rev 2. He told CNN that Denmark's trailblazing efforts in wind power are the result of the country's energy crisis during the 1970s.

"The Danes were totally dependant on oil imported from the Middle East. Suddenly there was an embargo, so no oil. We learnt the lesson the hard way that you have to have diversified supplies of energy."

Danish company Vestas is the world's biggest supplier of wind turbines. Its president for Northern Europe, Klaus Mortensen, told CNN, "We are very focused on providing the lowest cost of energy. With the present system we are competitive with oil at $50 a barrel."

Iberdrola SA, the Spanish renewable-energy giant, says it will spend $2 billion it raised Tuesday in a bond issue to keep growing in the U.S. The company is already the second-largest wind-farm operator in the U.S., after Florida-based FPL Group Inc.'s NextEra Energy. The cash will strengthen Iberdrola's push to build more wind farms in the U.S., the world's largest market for wind power. The announcement seemed designed to damp criticism from congressional Republicans and conservative commentators about the amount of U.S. government money Iberdrola is getting under a new federal renewable-energy subsidy program. When the federal government handed out $502 million in cash grants last week, Iberdrola received a majority of the funds--$294 million --for five projects in Oregon, Texas, Pennsylvania and Minnesota.

"American capital, supported by the government's plans, is being invested in America and creating wealth and jobs in the country, thanks to Iberdrola," Iberdrola Chairman Ignacio Sanchez Galan said in a video posted on the company's Web site.

Along with being a safe investment during turbulent economic times, the cooperatives are drawing interest from those concerned not just with global warming and climate change, but also with energy security. "It's not only a climate issue, but it's also a problem with energy supplies," Clive Burke, a shareholder in the Westmill cooperative near Swindon, southwest England, told AFP. "We are exceeding the ability of our planet to support our energy needs."

Irish company to develop wind farms in Chile

Developing wind farms in Chile is to be the latest energy venture of Airtricity founder Eddie O'Connor. Mr O'Connor sold his Airtricity businesses in the US and Europe last year for €50 million and with a portion of the money set up a new company in February called Mainstream Renewable Power. Now, the relatively new company has signed into a €785 million joint venture deal with Chilean company Anders Energy to develop wind farms in the South American country. It is hoped that the wind farms created will generate enough power for around 217,000 homes, with a 35MW wind farm planned to be ready in two years in the Valparaiso region of Chile.
