US leads world toward economic crisis’ says Ron Paul

Dr. Ron Paul, the former congressman and US presidential candidate, says unless the United States shuts down the Federal Reserve System - the US central bank known as “the Fed” - the world will experience a major economic crisis.

Paul, the founder of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity, made the remarks in an article published on Monday while commenting on the US economy and the role the Federal Reserve plays in it.

“Allowing a secretive central bank to control monetary policy has resulting in an ever-expanding government, growing income inequality, a series of ever-worsening economic crises, and a steady erosion of the dollar’s purchasing power,” Dr. Paul wrote.

“Unless this system is changed, America, and the world, will soon experience a major economic crisis. It is time to finally audit, then end, the Fed.”

He called on the United States to restore a free-market monetary policy “to prevent the monetary system’s inevitable crash from causing a major economic crisis.”

The basic source of the economic trouble is America’s central banking system, which cannot function in a real market economy, he observed.

“The failure of the Fed’s policies of massive money creation, corporate bailouts, and quantitative easing to produce economic growth is a sign that the fiat money system’s day of reckoning is near,” he predicted.
The Obama administration has given the Federal Reserve new powers to oversee the financial system and regulate it, but Paul believes there should be more transparency on the side of the government.

In 1983, the Texas Republican proposed legislation to audit the Federal Reserve, but it failed to gain much support at the time.

Rich versus Poor: Inequality rises across the Globe: 85 richest people as wealthy as poorest half of the world

The world's wealthiest people aren't known for travelling by bus, but if they fancied a change of scene then the richest 85 people on the globe – who between them control as much wealth as the poorest half of the global population put together – could squeeze onto a single double-decker bus.

The extent to which so much global wealth has become corralled by a virtual handful of the so-called 'global elite' is exposed in a new report from Oxfam today January 20. It warned that those richest 85 people across the globe share a combined wealth of Euro 1.22 trillion ( US $ 1.65 trillion), as much as the poorest 3.5 billion of the world's population.

The Oxfam report lists five key policies governments can adopt to reduce inequality and recommends that the mix of policies should be tailored to the national context. The five are: universal health and education; progressive taxation; removal of barriers to equal rights and opportunities for women; land reform and income support programs.

Cuba: Fort Lauderdale company denied license by US to run ferry to Cuba, plans to appeal - by Doreen Hemlock

Just two weeks after a Fort Lauderdale company publicly complained of government delays on its application for ferry service to Cuba, a U.S. Treasury agency has denied the request.

Officials at Havana Ferry Partners say they will appeal. Its executives see no reason why U.S. authorities allow planes to carry U.S. passengers to Cuba but not ferries. Current U.S. regulations allow both "aircraft and vessels" to serve Cuba as an exception to the U.S. embargo against the communist-led island.

The denial came from the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which oversees the 50-year-old U.S. embargo against Cuba. Its Feb. 27 letter said ferry service to Cuba is "beyond the scope of current policy."

"We're not going away," said Leonard Moecklin Sr., Havana Ferry's managing partner.

Note EU-Digest: the 50 year old US embargo against Cuba is not only outdated but it has even hampered political change and Democracy in Cuba. Far more so than if an open free trade policy had been instituted between Cuba and the United States. Its high time to do away with this archaic embargo and let the free market system do its work.
