EU unveils plans for €20bn air traffic system
A €20bn ($23.5bn) air traffic system was announced yesterday by the European Commission to handle the projected doubling of flights in Europe over the next two decades. The commission unveiled its plans for the "Sesar" system using the latest technologies to boost safety, cut emissions and manage flight patterns. The transport commissioner, Jacques Barrot, said the project would eventually add about €50bn to Europe's economy and create almost 200,000 new jobs. The scheme will use the new EU's satellite navigation programme Galileo to help manage traffic.
