Women warriors of jihad
Some are blond with cherubic Dutch looks making them less likely to raise suspicion. They're part of a chilling trend in the Netherlands and Belgium: militants' wives ready to carry out suicide bomb attacks. The women of the Dutch extremist network were a new breed of holy warriors on the front lines where Islam and the West collide. In a disturbing trend in the Netherlands and Belgium, police are investigating militants' wives suspected of plotting suicide attacks with their husbands -- or on their own. In November, a 35-year-old Belgian named Muriel Degauque rammed an explosives-filled vehicle into a U.S. convoy in Iraq, becoming the first converted Western woman to carry out a suicide bombing for the networks affiliated with al-Qaeda. U.S. commandos killed her husband a day later as he prepared a suicide attack wearing an explosives vest near Fallujah. The youthful Dutch group is a unique mix of extremist ferocity and modern European attitudes.
