Another round of big-ticket aircraft purchases in the air
MUMBAI: Indian carriers have made it a habit of stealing the thunder at international air-shows with their huge aircraft orders. This tradition will be continued at the biennial Asian Aerospace show, popularly known as the Singapore air show, which begins on February 21. The Wadia group-promoted Go Air is planning to make a big-bang announcement on its aircraft acquisition plans at the event. Aviation industry sources said the order is likely to go to the European consortium Airbus, which has been on a roll since the past year, grabbing a lion’s share of the orders placed by new airlines. It is not clear how big the deal will be. Mr Wadia said a final evaluation is yet to be completed and the announcement will only be made at the show. Air shows, with their captive aviation industry audience, have often been chosen by several airlines to make major announcements. Aircraft manufacturer Airbus said, “India is one of the world’s most promising markets and it is predicted that 100m new urban middle-class consumers will become potential air travellers by ’10.”The other deal at the world’s largest air-show was an order for A380 superjumbos and A320s by Kingfisher Airlines. Jet Airways had split its order for both Airbus and Boeing planes.
