Big oil's windfall profits split EU - by Tobias Buck
EUROPEAN Union finance ministers are split over a controversial suggestion to impose windfall taxes on big oil companies which are earning record profits brought about by soaring oil prices. The idea of a special tax was floated by Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg's Prime Minister and the influential chairman of the eurozone group of finance ministers. Mr Juncker said high energy prices were starting to "irritate parts of our public opinion" while oil companies "appear to be the big gainers". "On taxation of oil company profits, we are at the beginning of a process. I can simply say we started this discussion."
