EU Mandates Seat Belts for Tour Buses
BRUSSELS, Belgium - Safety belts will have to be used in all seats on tour buses and vans across the European Union , the European Commission said in a new directive presented Friday. The directive also requires children less than 4.4 feet tall to be restrained in cars by a seat adapted to their weight.
The Commission said failure to use seat belts is the second biggest cause of road deaths in the EU, after speeding, and ahead of drink-driving. A Commission study said improved use of seat belts would save 5,500 lives a year in the bloc.
