EU Perplexed by Leftist Latin America
Leaders from the European Union and Latin America are currently holding summit talks in Vienna to discuss cooperation between the two regions. But with Latin America increasingly turning towards leftist politicians and protectionist policies, the Europeans don't appear to know whom to talk to, or what to say to them.
Center-left daily Süddeutsche Zeitung emphasizes that "Europe is having a hard time developing a unitary strategy" to deal with the leftward shift that has characterized Latin America in recent years. The commentator notes that the EU's approach to the continent is characterized by a certain "hypocrisy." The speech EU Foreign Affairs Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner held in Vienna yesterday is paraphrased as follows in the editorial: "You can do what you want of course, but please don't touch our companies and their economic interests."
