EU and World Cup: A unique opportunity
The World Cup could be a showcase for promoting anti-racism, tolerance and unity, argues Claude Moraes MEP. It will be hard to miss, and even those reading this article who have no interest in football, or whose national team may not have made the final, will still agree that the unprecedented global TV audience for the World Cup gives Germany a unique opportunity to show its modern face, and make an important statement about tackling intolerance and division both on and off the pitch. For those who argue that sport and politics should not mix, it is rather too late. Such major events have always historically had some sort of message; both good and bad, examples include the boycotts of the Moscow and Los Angeles Olympics. But major events have also had a more inspirational effect - for example, the World Cup in France showed how a multi-cultural football team could unify the nation - for a period at least.
