In Europe, immigration problems are significantly worse - Conor Friedersdorf
While the attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon alerted Europeans to the threat of Islamic terrorism, local events in several European countries have done as much to shape immigration politics and policy there. Millions of moderate Muslims live peacefully in Europe. Islamic Turkey, a nation that grows more prosperous each year, still hopes to join the European Union.
Nevertheless, Islamic radicalism and tension between secular European culture and Islamic culture are the factors that drive European opposition to immigration, even as unfathomably low birthrates among native Europeans and a collapsing social welfare system create powerful economic incentives for increased immigration.
