Merkel's CDU Widens Lead in Poll on Economy, Party Congress - by Alan Crawford and Andreas Cremer
German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats opened up their biggest gap over her Social Democrat coalition partner since June, a poll showed, bolstered by falling unemployment and prospects for strong economic growth.
Merkel's CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, gained 1 percentage point to 33 percent, a six- month high, giving them a seven percentage point lead over the SPD, according to a weekly survey by the Forsa institute conducted for Stern magazine.
The German economy is heading for its fastest expansion since 2000 and unemployment fell to the lowest in four years in November. Support for the SPD dipped two points to 26 percent, the lowest since August last year, the survey of 2,509 people showed. Two weeks ago the two parties were level at 29 percent.
