Springtime for Angela Merkel and Germany

The EU has turned the corner economically with the world’s biggest exporter taking the lead, write David Smith and Michael Woodhead in Frankfurt
IT was flowers in the Bundestag for German chancellor Angela Merkel when she celebrated her first year in office late last month, as she and the rest of the country basked not only in the warmest autumn for 1,000 years but the best economic figures this decade. Jobless figures are dramatically down and the economy has grown faster than predicted. What is good for Germany is, in general, good for Europe. The pick-up in growth in the country has been matched by a recovery throughout “euroland” — the 12 nations that adopted the single currency.

Growth, which appeared to be stuck at a ponderous 1% or 1.5%, has moved strongly higher, helping to push the euro itself up against the beleaguered dollar.
