Bird flu outbreak, strain H5N1 confirmed in France
Tests on three swans found dead in northeast France have confirmed the presence of the H5N1 strain of bird flu, which is potentially deadly to humans, the agriculture ministry said today. France, Europe's biggest poultry producer, has stepped up surveillance, with agriculture minister Michel Barnier raising the threat level from bird flu from 'moderate' to 'high' following the test results on the swans that were found dead in northeast France last week.
