Madonna to headline Live Earth London - by Simon Crerar
The Live Earth concerts take place tomorrow with a series of gigs across the globe broadcast live on the internet. Organised by Al Gore, the environmental crusader and former United States vice president, the star-studded concerts are being held to highlight the threat of climate change. Madonna will headline the concert at London's Wembley Stadium. The environmental extravaganza begins in Sydney at 0300 BST. Concerts follow in Tokyo (0500, all times BST), Shanghai (1130), Hamburg (1230), London (1330), Johannesburg (1830), New Jersey (1830) and Rio de Janeiro (2130), with artists donating their performing time and all proceeds going to Gore's non-profit Alliance for Climate Protection. The Rio gig will now go ahead after a judge overturned yesterday's decision to cancel it over safety concerns. Billed by Gore as "the biggest show on earth", the Live Earth events will be beamed to a worldwide audience of two billion people.
