Airbus: Tanker contract will not move jobs from Europe to US
Defence contractor EADS said Wednesday that a contract it recently won to supply the US air force with tanker planes will create new jobs in the United States rather than moving old ones from Europe. "There is no relocation of jobs," a spokesman for the European group told AFP, contradicting an earlier statement from EADS' partner Northrop Grumman Corporation which said the deal would see work shift across the Atlantic. Some 1,000 jobs are to be created in Mobile, Alabama to assemble the tanker planes and another 300 related to construction of A330 commercial planes, the EADS spokesman said. There are enough orders for the A330 for the firm to keep personnel currently employed at the Airbus site in Toulouse, France, in work, according to the spokesman. Airbus is an EADS subsidiary.
US-based Northrop Grumman had said earlier the tanker contract would result in the transfer of 2,000 jobs from Europe to the United States.
