Dutch agree to sign EU pact with Serbia but attach strings - by Vanessa Mock
The Netherlands has yielded to pressure to sign a pact offering Serbia closer ties with the EU, but has insisted that key demands must be met before the deal comes into force. EU foreign ministers leant heavily on the Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen to sign the pre-membership pact, which they hope will sway Serb voters to support pro-Western parties in next month's elections.
Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said. Slovenia currently presides over the EU. But The Hague says the pact is just a symbolic gesture given Mr Verhagen's insistence that Belgrade must cooperate in the hunt for war crime suspects before it is ratified.
