Czech president Klaus challenges EU's approach to Lisbon treaty

Czech President Vaclav Klaus today challenged the ongoing EU summit's agreement on all EU countries keeping their EU commissioners until 2014 at least, a decision that should help the Lisbon treaty be ratified by the Irish in a repeated referendum. Klaus, a well-known critic of the reform Lisbon treaty, said at a meeting with Czech businessmen that the agreement is at odds with the text of the treaty that has been ratified by a majority of EU states. Under the Lisbon treaty, if it took effect, the next European Commission would have the same number of members as the present one. However, after 2014 their number would be reduced to correspond to two-thirds of the EU member states, a prospect Dublin was reluctant to accept. The Brussels summit has agreed that the reduction would be prevented by a special addendum that could be submitted for ratification along with another treaty, such as the Croat accession one.
