Baseball: Team USA advances in World Cup and Holland Beats Korea
Phillies prospect Terry Tiffee hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Team USA added six more runs in the eighth to beat China, 8-0, in 2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup action Saturday. Team USA (2-1), which defeated Germany, 9-1, on Friday and lost to Venezuela in extra innings in its first game, now advances to the second round of the tournament Sunday against Canada. Other second-round games include the Netherlands against Korea; Puerto Rico against Spain; Australia against Netherlands; Cuba and Great Britain; Venezuela against Nicaragua; and Italy against Chinese Taipei.In other games, Cuba defeated Spain, 5-4; Mexico topped Australia, 10-9; Nicaragua defeated Japan, 8-4; the Netherlands defeated Korea, 9-5; Great Britain defeated Croatia, 4-1; Puerto Rico topped South Africa, 12-0; Venezuela beat Germany, 12-1; Chinese Taipei beat Czech Republic, 10-1; and Canada beat Sweden, 19-1.
