EU Foreign Policy Chief Urges More Aid to Haiti


The European Union commission foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton called for more aid to Haiti on Thursday, even numerous offers of European assistance are on their way. "It is not only about the immediate help for the humanitarian disaster," Ashton who is also vice president of the commission told reporters. "We also have started to work on our assistance that we can give to the people of Haiti in the medium- and long- term." After being informed about the catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti, the EU commission's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) provided a fast-track "primary emergency" of 3 million euros (4.34 million U.S. dollars) to international relief groups for immediate relief activities such as sheltering and medical support.

On behalf of the ministers for Europe that were taking part in the meeting in La Granja (Segovia), the Spanish Secretary of State for the EU, Diego Lpez Garrido, declared Wednesday during a press conference, that all the EU's institutions are working to provide an efficient response to this situation.

The President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, expressed the EU's support to Haiti, and said that "Europe will be at the side of the Haitians to provide immediate humanitarian assistance and help to rebuild its economy and society."
