Historic world port and fashionista capital, Antwerp has always lived on the crest of the wave. Now, a separatist party heading into today’s municipal elections wants to use the city as a base for breaking away from Belgium — putting it at the forefront of a European breakaway trend just as the Union celebrates winning the Nobel Peace Prize for fostering continental unity.
Moves toward separatism have been getting bigger these past months as the economic crisis pushes people faster toward stark choices on nationhood and their future. It is no different in Spain’s Catalonia, another wealthy region grousing that it has to pay for others in its crisis-hit country.
Scotland, too, is looking at the option of going its own way, making the United Kingdom a little less united.
Note EU-Digest: it's always amazing to see how narrow - minded nationalists look at the world. The examples of nationalism gone out of control are numerous, specially when economic times go bad. Unfortunately it keeps on sticking up its ugly head again and again. Keeping cultural traditions or honoring dead languages is not an issue, it is believing that dying for nationalistic beliefs in spite of anything else which makes it dangerous. The Nazi's, the IRA, and more recently the Alliance of European National Movements (AENM) are prime examples.

It's always amazing to see how narrow - minded some presumed internationlist look at the world. What kind of nationalism are you talking about? About French one which is proud of not signing the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages pushing those languages and cultures to desappear or about Catalan or Basque nationalisms which defend and impulse their own cultures and languges in word of diversity and solidarity.
Who's head is the ugly one?
