France: It's Beaujolais Nouveau time

It’s the third Thursday of November, and you know what that means? It’s Beaujolais Nouveau! The light and fruity wine can now be found in almost every restaurant, bar and supermarket throughout the country - a great way to kick start the festive season.

While the soft red wine made from Gamay grapes is nothing to write home about, it does attract plenty of fan fair in France, as the country declares "Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrive!"

The Beaujolais wine, from the region just north of Lyon, is designed to be consumed early, normally by the following May. It owes its drinkability to the wine making process which preserves the fresh fruit qualities of the wine without extracting bitter tannins from the grape skins.

In keeping with its soft flavours, Beaujolais Nouveau should be served cool, not at room temperature.
Most restaurants and bars will be offering Beaujolais Nouveau specials with discounts on bottles. It should be paired with light dishes; a chacuterie plate is perfect.

Tasting the first batch of Beaujolais Nouveau is becoming tradition throughout the world, and by the time this period is over, more than 66 million bottles of wine will have been distributed across the globe!
