European Aircraft Industry: Airbus poised to revamp A330 with Rolls-Royce

Airbus is set to upgrade its A330 with engines provided exclusively by Rolls-Royce, setting the stage for a bitter new phase in a battle for wide-body jet orders with Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, people familiar with the matter said.

The move accelerates a growing interdependence between the European firms on large jets, with General Electric GE.N - the main alternative A330 engine supplier - no longer in the running for the $2 billion "A330neo" revamp, they said on Thursday.

Shares in Airbus and Rolls-Royce both rose as much as 1.8 percent against a flat market in early Friday trading.
The people, asking not to be named, said the provisional selection of Rolls as sole supplier for the revamped A330neo, offering up to 14-15 percent in fuel savings with the help of new wingtips, remains subject to Airbus Group board approval.

European Aircraft Industry: Airbus A330 Production Rate Reaches 10 Per Month

Currently Airbus  is producing the A330-200 and A330-300 passenger variants, the A330-200F freighter and the military multi-role tanker transport aircraft, which is based on the A330-200 airframe. 

Airbus reports a current backlog volume of more than 280 orders for its A330, leading to the need for the increased production rate. 

The manufacturer is preparing for the maiden flight of its latest wide body aircraft, the A350 XWB, this summer. The A350 is scheduled to enter commercial service for its launch customer, Qatar Airways, in early 2014.

Air France Flight 447 Voice Recorder Retrieved from Atlantic Ocean Floor - by Matt Molnar

The French aviation safety agency BEA on Tuesday announced the discovery and recovery of Air France Flight 447′s cockpit voice recorder from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, nearly two years after the Airbus A330-200 disappeared.

The recorder was located late Monday night local time and retrieved early Tuesday morning by the Remora 6000, a US-built remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The discovery comes a day after the same team found and retrieved the airplane’s data recorder.

On June 1st, 2009, Air France Flight 447, an Airbus A330-200, was enroute to Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport from Rio de Janeiro when it apparently plunged into the Atlantic roughly halfway between South America and Africa, killing all 228 people on board. The cause of the crash has been impossible to determine without the data and voice recorders, which were widely believed to have been unrecoverable due to the extremely deep seas in the area.

Air France crash: Airbus black box recovered by search team

A black box flight recorder from an Air France plane that crashed off the coast of Brazil in 2009, killing 228 people, has been recovered by a deep-sea search team, reviving hopes of understanding what caused the crash.

French investigators said one of the plane's two data recorders had been located by a robot submarine about 3,900 metres (12,800ft) below the Atlantic ocean's surface.

Pictures published on the website of France's Bureau of Investigation and Analysis (BEA), before the box was pulled on to the deck of the ship Île de Sein, show an orange cylindrical object half-buried in sand. In a statement, BEA confirmed that the device was "in good physical condition".

Air France search teams find part of the flight recorder

Part of a flight recorder from the Air France plane which crashed off the coast of Brazil in June 2009 has been discovered by search teams. But officials said it was not the ‘black box’ section which would reveal crucial data about the cause of the crash, which killed all 228 people on board.

The tail section of the Airbus 330 was found on the floor of the Atlantic ocean earlier this month.

New search for lost Air France Airbus to begin in March

The French air accident investigation agency, the Bureau d’Enquetes et d’Analyses (BEA), has announced that a new search for the wreckage of Air France Airbus A330-200 F -GZCP will start in March.

Flying Flight AF447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, F-GZCP crashed into the South Atlantic in the early morning of June 1, 2009, and 228 people lost their lives. The cause of the accident remains a mystery.
This new search, which will cost $12,5-million, will be jointly funded by Air France and Airbus, and will be the fourth search for the lost aircraft. The key objective is the location and recovery of F-GZCP’s two so-called Black Boxes (they are actually bright orange in colour), the Cockpit Voice Recorder and the Digital Flight Data Recorder.

The search will employ the capabilities of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, which is based in the US state of Massachusetts and is the world’s biggest private non-profit oceanographic institution.

France to hunt again for vanished Rio-Paris flight

The French government has announced plans for a fourth search for the flight recorders of an Air France Airbus 330 jetliner that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean while flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris 18 months ago. Families of some of the 228 people who died in the crash of Flight 447 have demanded that France not give up the hunt for the flight recorders -- and answers about what caused the crash.

Transport Minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet and Junior Transport Minister Thierry Mariani announced on Thursday plans for the fourth search starting in February. Their statement says the "best equipment currently available" will be used.

France: Sarkozy makes first trip on controversial new jet to G20 meeting

French President Nicolas Sarkozy made his first trip aboard his new official plane on Thursday as he headed to South Korea for the G20 summit after attending the French 11 November ceremonies on Thursday. Dubbed Air Sarko One, the new jet features a double bedroom, an air-conditioned smoking room and an anti-missile system.

The Airbus A330-200, has a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom immediately behind the cockpit. This links to a private office where an air filter system allows the president to smoke cigars.There is also a conference room, a high-tech communications room and a small operating room

"Black box" flight recorders should be modified to emit signals for longer, experts investigating June's Air France disaster over the Atlantic have said. Their inquiry into why the flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashed has been hampered by the failure to find the jet's recorders. The reliability of speed sensors on the Airbus A330 has been questioned and BEA experts have suggested that new safety standards might be needed. "At this stage, despite the extensive analyses carried out by the BEA on the basis of the available information, it is still not possible to understand the causes and the circumstances of the accident," the BEA report said. Another recommendation was that passenger planes flying over the sea should be equipped with an extra beacon transmitting on a different frequency, which would increase the chances of finding the wreckage.

A string of automated messages just before the crash showed there were inconsistencies in data from the sensors, known as pitot tubes. BEA said safety tests on the equipment did not replicate high-altitude conditions and it called for more studies of cloud masses and icy conditions.

Made by Airbus, the giant European company that emerged around the time of Concorde’s development, the twin-engine, wide-bodied A330 is less than five years old. Since 1993, Airbus has received more than 1,400 orders for this plane and its close sibling, the four-engine A340, and there are around 1,000 of them in the sky. Each A330 costs about euro 150 million. ‘From nose to tail, the A330 and A340 incorporate the latest advances in Airbus technology and innovation,’ the company’s website says, adding that they exhibit ‘the best take-off and landing performance in all conditions, as well as high-efficiency flight’. With its human-proof computer systems, it is the most technically advanced aircraft in the world. So why has the Airbus 330's gleaming new fleet been so dogged by technical problems... and disturbing evidence of flawed cabling been so comprehensively ignored?

Company sources insist that the ADIRUs aren’t to blame because QF72 and AF447 used different types. This argument fails to impress the families’ lawyer, Tardivat: ‘We’re looking at the failure of large parts of the system, and there’s no way something like this should happen simply because of a problem with the pitot tubes. We need to look at the software. Was it the same – or very similar – in both planes? So far, Airbus won’t tell us. If it was, the fact that there were different boxes on different planes is no more important than one person using an IBM, another a Dell PC.’ Chris Hounsfield, editor of Aerospace Testing International, points to another possible cause: ‘Airbus crew have told me that their pilots can rely too heavily on an “intelligent” aircraft’s flying ability, and should the “intelligent” systems fail, they may not have had enough simulator training to cope with a sudden “flip” to mechanical systems.’

However, Tardivat and Hounsfield agree that the ultimate problem may lie somewhere else entirely – with the 100-odd miles of insulated wire connecting everything from computers to seat-back televisions. Ed Block, an American air investigator, has long been trying to draw attention to the dangers of some wire types. It was he who found the evidence of the likely cause of the disaster on TWA Flight 800, a Boeing 747 that blew up off Long Island in 1996, killing all 230 on board. He concluded the problem had been short circuits, or arcs, that ultimately led to sparking in the vapour-filled central fuel tank.

Yesterday, Boeing (BA) announced its fifth delay in the delivery of its latest aircraft, the 787 Dreamliner. Boeing has 865 orders for the $178 million aircraft, which is designed to cost 20 percent less to operate and maintain. A big reason for these savings is the 787's use of composite materials -- for example, All Nippon Airways, which is to be first to receive the 787, said in April that fuel savings and higher revenue from the higher capacity 787 could add $100 million in fiscal 2011. But the very composite materials that are saving money for airlines are now contributing to the problems that delayed the 787 for the fifth time. And those problems raise questions about whether it can ever be safe to fly -- which would probably scare passengers from boarding the 787. In order to understand why the 787 might be unsafe, it is crucial to understand more about the 787's composite materials -- including carbon fiber reinforced epoxy tape. Older aircraft are made of aluminum, which is heavier than the composite material.

Composites are lighter and stronger hence able to fly more fuel efficiently. But engineers don't completely understand how aircraft made of composite materials will respond to the stresses of actual flight. This incomplete understanding is reflected in the computer models they use to design the aircraft. The reason for the fifth delay is that the actual 787 did not behave the way the model predicted.

Those following the crash of Air France Flight 447 have probably realized that speculation abounds about what may have caused the plane to break up just 14 minutes after the pilots had indicated that they were flying into dark clouds. It is still not clear that the Airbus A330 that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean was going too fast or too slow. Any assertions about either, at this point, are speculation.

It's the birthplace of some of the world's strongest storms, a nearly continuous band of colliding weather systems near the equator where the Air France jet vanished in the night. The region is known to scientists as the Intertropical Convergence Zone. It's where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres clash, spawning violent thunderstorms that can tower up to 60,000 feet, far higher than any commercial airliner could fly over. Officials suspect the Air France jet carrying 228 people that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday night between Brazil and Africa may have run into trouble as it crossed into this zone. Reports indicate the plane may have passed into a 400-mile-long cluster of developing thunderstorms with lightning and 100 mph updrafts.

Basically, this zone, which experts refer to as the ITCZ, is a stormy weather band that wraps some 25,000 miles around the world, generally hugging the equator. Like an ocean current, it's fluid in its movements as the seasons change, deviating several degrees north and south. The zone's shape is more like a slithering snake than a pencil-straight line, and can sometimes be several hundred miles wide. While the region can be quiet and calm, it is also "the birthplace of our strongest storms on Earth," said Henry Margusity, a senior meteorologist for AccuWeather.com.

Fears for 228 passengers as Air France jet 'disappears' between Brazil and France

An Air France plane with 228 people on board has disappeared from the radar off the Brazilian coast. Air France flight 447 was on its way from from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil bound for Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. The flight was scheduled to arrive in Paris at 9am British time, according to the airport. Air France spokeswoman Brigitte Barrand said: "Air France regrets to announce that it is without news from Air France flight 447 flying from Rio to Paris." The plane disappeared about 186 miles (300km) northeast of the coastal Brazilian city of Natal.

Air traffic control are reported to have lost contact with the Airbus A330 at O600 GMT after it took off from Rio de Janeiro.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has taken delivery of its first Airbus A330-300. The aircraft was handed over by Airbus at a delivery ceremony in Toulouse, France, yesterday. It is one of 19 new Rolls-Royce Trent 700-powered A330-300s that the airline will be leasing to provide "interim lift" until purchased Airbus A350s arrive in the coming years.

AerCap Holdings announces order of ten additional new Airbus A330-200

Global aviation company AerCap Holdings N.V. has announced an agreement with Airbus Industrie to increase the order of Airbus A330-200 aircraft placed in December 2006 from 20 to 30 aircraft. No value was disclosed. The agreement will bring AerCap's total order book of brand new aircraft to 107.
