USA: Omicron, weather ground more than 1,300 U.S. flights on Sunday

.S. airlines called off more than 1,300 flights on Sunday as surging COVID-19 infections due to the highly transmissible Omicron variant of the coronavirus grounded crews and forced tens of thousands of Christmas weekend travellers to change their plans.

Commercial airlines cancelled 1,318 flights within, into or out of the United States on Sunday, according to a tally on flight-tracking website FlightAware.com.

It was the third straight day of travelling pain, after a total of 997 flights were scrapped on Christmas Day and nearly 700 on Christmas Eve. Thousands more were delayed on all three days.

US Presidential elections: Reality TV presidency cancelled after 4-year run - by Demetri Sevastopulo

Domestically, he failed to achieve some of his biggest priorities — building the wall and a big infrastructure bill. But he put three conservative judges on the Supreme Court, and ushered through a huge tax cut.

At the G7 in Canada, Mr Trump threw a couple of pieces of candy across the table, saying: “Here, Angela. Don't say I never give you anything.”

Although he frequently praised his “good friend” Chinese president Xi Jinping until the coronavirus arrived in the US, he launched a trade war with China before signing a piecemeal deal that produced very little.

One former official said Mr Trump wanted to call the legislation, “The Cut, Cut, Cut Bill”, and told Paul Ryan, speaker of the House, that Republicans on Capitol Hill always gave their legislation such boring names.

In another example of the Teflon-nature of his presidency until this weekend, Mr Trump was impeached in the House over his attempts to get Ukraine to meddle in the US election by digging up dirt on Mr Biden — but was acquitted in a Senate trial.

Mr Trump was only the third president to be impeached in the House, after Bill Clinton in 1998, and Andrew Johnson 130 years before that.

EU court overturns US data transfer agreement in Facebook privacy case |

Europe's top court on Thursday struck down a data privacy pact that had allowed companies to transfer private user data between servers in Europe and the United States. However, EU citizens' data can still be sent to the US and other countries under a separate, existing mechanism.

In a case brought against internet giant Facebook, the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg ruled that the data transfer agreement "Privacy Shield" failed to adequately protect Europeans' data from US surveillance and security laws and was therefore invalid.

N.Korea-US relations: North Korea says no interest in Trump summit until 'hostile policy' removed

A senior North Korean official said on Wednesday that the United States must drop its “hostile policy” towards Pyongyang in order to restart stalled denuclearisation talks, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported.

Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui told reporters after meeting Russian officials in Moscow it would be “impossible” to hold another summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump if he maintains his current stance towards the North.

“To negotiate with the United States going forward, we would be able to discuss nuclear issues again when it withdraws all of its hostile policy against us,” Choe said, according to Yonhap.

Turkey: Ankara bans Turkish German-language LGBTI film festival

The four-feature German LGBTI Film Days festival, which was coordinated by the German Embassy, was scheduled to start on Thursday and run through Friday in the central district of Kizilay in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

The governor's office said there was a "clear and imminent danger" that certain groups "with certain social sensitivities" would react negatively to the festival. Its content "could incite hatred and enmity towards another section of society," according to the mayor's office.

Pink Life QueerFest, which organized the festival, criticized the move, saying it "deprives us of our constitutional rights," in a statement.
