The pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympic Games came to an end Sunday with a smaller, more subdued closing ceremony than in years' past, much like the opening ceremony 17 days ago.
After a more than two-hour ceremony that saluted the athletes, organizers and volunteers who made these Games a success, IOC president Thomas Bach declared the Games closed and the Olympic flame was extinguished.

The federal government has extended restrictions at the Canada-U.S. land border for another 30 days — until Jan. 21 — according to Public Safety Canada.
The world's longest international border has been closed to non-essential travel for months, although essential workers — such as truck drivers and health care professionals — are still able to cross by land. Canadians also are still able to fly to U.S. destinations.
Americans wishing to travel to Canada must prove to the Canada Border Service Agency that their visit is for an essential purpose or they have immediate family in Canada, they have no COVID-19 symptoms and they have a 14-day quarantine plan — unless they can prove they are exempted.

Although Canada and the U.S. have agreed to close their shared
land border to non-essential travel, they don't appear to agree on
several related issues — including what to do next.
More than seven months after the border closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Donald Trump have offered up contradictory messages about what happens now.
The Canada-U.S. border is set to stay closed until Oct. 21, and Trudeau implied this week that the date will be extended.
In an interview Wednesday on Winnipeg podcast The Start, Trudeau said Canada plans to keep the border closed as long as COVID-19 case counts in the U.S. remains high.

Canada - US Relations: Canada-U.S. border will remain closed until Sept. 21
The federal government will extend the Canada-U.S. land border closure for another 30 days until Sept. 21, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said Friday.
The closure to non-essential travel has been in place for months, but with caseloads still high in many U.S. states, the two governments have mutually agreed to continue restricting movement across the world's longest international border.

Turkey blocks social media over photos of slain prosecutor
Turkish authorities blocked access to Twitter, YouTube and briefly to
Facebook over the publication of photos of the prosecutor taken hostage
and killed by militants in Istanbul last week.
Turkey's presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said a prosecutor sought the ban on social media after the photos’ release.
"This has to do with the publishing of the prosecutor's picture. What happened in the aftermath (of the prosecutor's killing) is as grim as the incident itself," he said, Reuters reports.
"The demand from the prosecutor's office is that this image not be used anywhere in electronic platforms," Kalin told a news conference in Ankara.
