Over 11,000 athletes are participating in the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and they’ve got more on their minds than just the competition. The first Olympic Games to be held in South America come with some unique challenges, along with the usual threats to health and safety that every Olympic Game presents.
“Approximately 10 percent of Olympians get hurt during their days at the games, either while training on site or in actual competition,” reports Scientific American. EU Security Concerns EU Executve Travel: "Spy-air? EU warned on VIP jet leasing
Flying EU and Nato VIPs on jets from a part-Chinese firm could be a security risk, a Belgian aviation company has said.
Its warning was lambasted as a "James Bond" fantasy, by reference to the fictional British spy.
But if there is a risk, then top EU officials have already been exposed on other "air-taxis".
And the Belgian aviation company which raised the China alarm has its own security questions to answer on Russia.

Ireland: EU stands with Ireland in Brexit talks, Barnier assures Coveney - by Patrick Smyth
“Ireland’s concerns are the union’s concerns, and all member states and EU institutions are fully united in this regard,” Michel Barnier told Brussels journalists and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Coveney on Monday.
It is by now a familiar refrain,
but nonetheless reassuring to Mr Coveney who was in Brussels for the day
for consultations with the EU’s chief negotiator, Mr Barnier, the
European Parliament’s Brexit representative, Liberal MEP Mr Guy Verhofstadt,
Irish MEPs Matt Carthy (SF), Brian Hayes (FG), and Luke Flanagan (Ind), and Danuta Hubner the parliament’s European People’s Party chair of its constitutional affairs committee.
The reassurance, it is expected,
will be reflected in detail in the Commission negotiating paper on
Ireland expected to be published in the next week, and whose content was
certainly central to the Barnier-Coveney working lunch.

Hungary: Putin Heads To Budapest Amid Concerns Over EU Unity
Russian President Vladimir Putin is heading to Hungary for his second visit in two years, a development that has many in the European Union looking on with concern.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s February 2 meeting with Putin comes at a time of heightened worries within the bloc about the views of new U.S. President Donald Trump, who has expressed disdain for the European Union and a desire for closer relations with Moscow.
"We are concerned [about the trip], there is no doubt about it," an EU official requesting anonymity told RFE/RL on February 1. "It is Putin’s year. He's looking at a divided Europe, which the Visegrad Four (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia), especially Hungary, are making more divided due to actions like [inviting Putin to Budapest], and a United States that for the first time is providing no counterbalance to [Putin].”
Putin's visit -- his second to Budapest in two years and his third official meeting with Orban in that time -- is primarily to discuss economic issues, including the controversial Paks nuclear-power plant that Russia is contracted to build and further agreements on natural-gas purchases.
Putin has received few invitations to EU countries since Moscow’s illegal 2014 takeover of Ukraine's Crimea region and the introduction of EU sanctions against Moscow over its interference in Ukraine.
