Iran’s government reacted by accusing America of removing the name of God from its national flag.

EU-Polish Relations: Brussels wins support for further legal steps in dispute with Poland -S, Fleming, H. Foy, V. Pop and M. Khan

European leaders warned Poland that the union was prepared to deploy further legal sanctions against Warsaw in response to its defiance of EU law, as they urged the country to walk back its challenges to the bloc’s judicial foundations.

In their first face-to-face talks since Poland’s top court ruled that key parts of EU law are not compatible with the country’s constitution, leaders voiced strong support for the European Commission’s pledge to hit back at Warsaw.

However, numerous leaders also called for political dialogue to be prioritised alongside legal measures, as they sought to ease a bitter row that has triggered fears that Poland could ultimately exit the Union.

Citing U.S. national security grounds the Trump administration in 2018 imposed tariffs of 25% on EU steel and 10% on aluminium - measures that steelmakers such as Thyssenkrupp (TKAG.DE) and Voestalpine (VOES.VI) have said they were affected by.

Canada - G7 meeting: France’s Macron threatens rare rebuke of U.S. at G-7, Trump fires back - by Damian Paletta, David Lynch, Heather Long

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday threatened to join with other world leaders to issue a rare rebuke of the United States at a global summit here this weekend, drawing immediate and sharp replies from President Trump.

Macron said Trump could be excluded from joining with other leaders in a joint declaration of unity at the end of a global summit here, a very unusual move that was meant to isolate Trump’s recent burst of trade threats aimed at numerous U.S. allies.

“The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be,” Macron wrote on Twitter. “Because these 6 countries represent values, they represent an economic market which has the weight of history behind it and which is now a true international force.”

Poland: Donald Tusk: I’ll be back in Poland, and not to watch TV – by MichaÅ‚ Broniatowski

European Council President Donald Tusk hinted at a return to domestic politics in an interview Friday.

“I’m not going to retire,” he told Polish news channel TVN24. “In 2019 I will be back in Poland and let no one think that I will only watch TV.”

The former Polish prime minister refused to elaborate, saying: “I will not formulate scenarios for the moment and I hope there will be no emergency scenarios.”

He added: “I hope that Poles who dream about stable democracy and the rule of law will be able to win future elections — I will be the happiest man on earth if this materializes. If things go differently, I do not exclude anything.”

Tusk was speaking at the European Center of Solidarity, a museum and cultural center built in the Gdańsk Shipyard where the Solidarność movement was created in 1980.

On the fight between Poland and the EU, which accuses Warsaw of going against the rule of law, Tusk said: “The problem is that permanent solutions may be taken. For example, when we talk about future European funds. I wish Poland didn’t lose a single euro cent for this reason.

“I will not be on the side of the PiS [the ruling Law and Justice party, which is a political enemy of Tusk’s] in the debate in Europe concerning the rule of law. I will not justify wrong actions of PiS.”

USA Presidency: Trump tweet: Facebook is fake news, anti-Trump

President Donald Trump took aim at Facebook on Wednesday, suggesting the social media company was in cahoots with "Fake News" networks.

Facebook is already under pressure in Washington, where investigators and Congress are examining thousands of Facebook advertisements from the 2016 election. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg also recently announced plans to sell millions of shares over the next 1½ years for his Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Its beneficiaries include programs for immigration and prison reform and affordable housing.

Facebook was not immediately available to comment on Trump's tweet.

The company's curation of news articles has drawn ire from both political parties. Last year, Zuckerberg agreed to meet with conservative leaders after accusations that Facebook had suppressed right-leaning news. But Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, has also pressed Facebook and other social media companies on accusations they enabled Russian tampering in the U.S. election, calling recent disclosures the "tip of the iceberg."

EU president Jean-Claude Juncker picks a fight with Donald Trump - by Jon Stone

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker has publicly mocked Donald Trump’s chaotic White House – potentially inviting a row with the volatile US president.

Describing the tumultuous events the last week in Washington DC as “stunning” Mr Juncker claimed the EU was “better organised” than the US.

“We are better organised than the Trump administration. That is because if there are any internal difficulties, those difficulties are fixed in a direct conversation instead of by firing people,” Mr Juncker told the Politico Europe website.

Europe's Valentine's Day jeopardized by Bulgarian flower blockade - by JC Finley

A transit permit dispute between Bulgaria and Turkey is holding up the delivery of millions of Valentine's Day flowers destined for Europe.

Turkish flower suppliers planned to ship 35 million flowers into Europe for Valentine's Day. Shippers were able to deliver 20 million, but told the BBC that 5 million are stuck at the border with Bulgaria and the rest are sitting in warehouses in southern Turkey.

At issue is a transit permit dispute that has been on-going for two weeks, which has prompted both Turkey and Bulgaria to close its borders to delivery trucks.

If the dispute is not resolved soon, flower producers in Turkey may face a 90 percent loss and cause European florists to raise their sales price.

Brazil • EU Takes Aim at Brazilian “Tax Advantages” in WTO Dispute

The EU filed a formal WTO complaint against Brazil in late December, targeting a series of tax measures that it claims provide unfair advantages to the South American country’s manufacturing sector.

In the request for consultations (DS472) - the first stage of WTO dispute settlement proceedings - the EU highlighted a series of tax measures and charges that Brazil has imposed in the automotive sector over the past two years.

This began in September 2011 with a 30 percent tax increase on motor vehicles, with an exemption for domestically produced cars and trucks. This was then followed by a new tax regime called “Innovar Auto,” launched in 2012 and set to expire in 2017. The EU also flagged tax measures affecting the electronics and technology industry, along with goods produced in Free Trade Zones, and tax advantages that Brasilia provides for exporters.

Brussels claims that these measures impose a higher tax burden on imported goods than on their domestic equivalents, while conditioning tax advantages to the use of locally produced goods. These policies have, the EU says, harmed their exporters while providing Brazilian producers with unfair advantages.

For their part, Brazilian officials say that their policies are in line with WTO obligations, with Foreign Minister Luiz Alberto Figueiredo insisting that his government has “solid arguments” in its favour.

EU team to monitor Gibraltar border

The European Commission is to send a fact-finding mission to Gibraltar to investigate controls at the border.
It follows tensions between Spain and the UK over extra border checks on the Spanish side, which have caused lengthy traffic delays.

Britain says the checks break EU free movement rules, but Spain says Gibraltar has not controlled smuggling.
The team of EU observers is expected to be despatched "as soon as possible" to assess the legality of the checks.

A row has erupted between Spain and Britain in recent weeks following the installation of an artificial reef by Gibraltar in the waters off the British territory.

Spain: Gibraltar waters dispute provokes diplomatic incident. between Spain and Britain

The conflict over the waters surrounding Gibraltar flared up again at the end of last week as the British and Spanish governments called in the respective ambassadors to make diplomatic protests in the light of recent incidents.

The British Foreign Office expressed its concerns to Spanish ambassador Federico Trillo at “provocative incursions” into “British Gibraltar Territorial Waters” on Tuesday last week, first by a Spanish naval ship and later by a Spanish customs vessel that “sought to apprehend a Gibraltarian civilian boat forcing the Royal Gibraltar Police to intervene”.

In turn the Spanish government summoned the British ambassador in Madrid to pass on its position regarding the conflict. An embassy official attended the meeting, in the absence of Ambassador Giles Paxman. The Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel García-Margallo made it clear that Spanish fishermen would “continue to fish in waters surrounding Gibraltar, where they have always fished, under the protection of the Guardia Civil”.

Spain does not recognise British sovereignty over the waters in question on the grounds that they were not mentioned in the Utrecht Treaty of 1713 when the Rock was ceded to the British Crown.

Croatia ready to solve banking row with Slovenia says FM

Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic said on Saturday her country was ready to solve a bank savings row with Slovenia that threatens to stall Zagreb's accession to the European Union.

"We will solve this problem and we are ready to solve it," Pusic said quoted by HINA news agency.
She was responding to Slovenia's recent threat that it would not ratify Croatia's accession to the EU unless a deal was reached over the banking row between the two former Yugoslav republics.

While Croatia is due to join the European Union on July 1, 2013, it still requires all 27 member states to ratify the accession treaty.

More than 130,000 Croatians claim they deposited 160 million euros ($207 million) in savings in Slovenia's Ljubljanska Banka before Yugoslavia fell apart in 1991.
